February, the month for romance in Paris
In 2008, Paris continues to live up to its reputation as “the world’s most romantic city”
and strive to attract lovers from all over the world. Paris has always been associated
with love: courtly love in the Middle Ages, then libertinism in the 16th century and in
the tradition of the French royal court and successive revolutions that helped to loosen
up strait-laced morals. Today, romantic strolls, candle-lit dinners, nights of love, tête-
à-têtes in cafes, specialist shopping … there is everything in Paris to satisfy the wildest
desires of enamoured couples; and Paris also offers an idyllic setting for future and
newly-married couples looking for somewhere to celebrate their love. In February, and
in particular, on 14 February St Valentine’s Day, romance is on everyone’s mind. For
this occasion, the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau is bringing together hundreds of
special offers throughout the month of February for loving couples staying in the
capital. So, Paris becomes, more than ever, the ideal place for all romantics.

             A few facts…
In the mood for love. 27 million people visit the French capital each year. For many of
them — 30 per cent of British tourists, for instance — a romantic tryst is the reason for
             their trip.
“I do!” Over 10,600 couples got married in Paris in 2006.
French kiss. This sensual smooch is reputed to be Gallic, as its name indicates: could
there be any other way to kiss in Paris?
Romantic reads. “Nadja” by André Breton, “Paris Spleen” by Charles Baudelaire,
“Bastille Tango” by Jean-François Vilar and “The Perfect Life of Lovers” by Monique
Romantic films. “Everyone says I love you” by Woody Allen, “A bout de soufflé” by
Michel Godard, “Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain” by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, “Les
Amants du Pont Neuf” by Léos Carax, “Before Sunset” by Richard Linklater, etc.
Libertine Paris. France’s libertine reputation comes from authors like the Marquis de
Sade, Crébillon and Choderlos de Laclos, famous for his “Liaisons dangerous”.

France’s most romantic queen takes centre stage at the Galeries nationales de

the life of Marie-Antoinette – the queen who had the « pavillon de l’Amour »
built on the estate of Bagatelle, near to Paris. Those images do not reveal the
full truth, which is what this exhibition seeks to reveal.

Paris bridges. The French capital has any number of bridges for lovers! Why are these simple passages from
one bank of the Seine to the other so charged with romance? Perhaps it is because the river comes into view
when crossing the Seine and the horizon opens up, making lovers feel as if they’re on top of the world.
Legend has it that a wish made under the Pont Marie, also known as the “lovers’ bridge”, will come true if it
is kept a secret. The movie “Les Amants du Pont-Neuf” (Lovers on the Bridge) turned the eponymous bridge
into a landmark for romance. The Pont des Arts is another popular spot for canoodling. Its light wooden
structure invites one to sit down and watch the play of light on the rippling waters of the Seine below
through the slats. In “Everyone says I love you”, Woody Allen choose this setting for his protagonists to dance
by the lights of the Seine.

The “I Love You” wall at Abbesses. We’ve all engraved a sweetheart’s name on a wall or tree trunk
when in the throes of a love affair, or toyed with the idea of doing so. Artist Frédéric Baron has turned this
tradition into a collection. Having gathered 1,000 “I love you” sample,s scrawled all over Paris in more than
300 languages, he decided to place them all on a wall with the help of calligrapher Claire Kito and wall
painting specialist Daniel Boulogne. So you can now admire exotic-sounding declarations of love —
“Assavakit”, “Munsmawa”, “Te iubesc” et al — in the heart of the Abbesses district and reflect on the
             universal nature of love.

Kissing on a public bench. The parks and gardens of Paris are popular spots for lovers. The Jardin de
Tuileries is a historic location for romantic trysts; in times past, Parisians wandered its wide alleys to try
their luck at love and games of chance. The Place des Vosges in the heart of the Marais is an equally pleasant
place for a romantic walk. Lovers in search of wide open spaces well away from curious onlookers will find
ideal spots in the Parc de Buttes-Chaumont and the Parc de la Villette. And couples can peacefully try out
their own version of the master sculptor’s “The Kiss” in the sublime gardens of the Musée Rodin.

Romantic Montmartre. Long associated with bohemian passion and free love, the Pigalle and Butte
Montmartre neighbourhoods continue to exercise their traditional appeal as prime locations for cabarets and
romantic holidays. The quiet village acquired its reputation as a pit stop for pleasure seekers in the 18th
century, while the Bal du Moulin Rouge invited people to kick up their heels from the 19th century onwards.
The area is now a legendary night spot where sex shops rub shoulders with dance revues. Further up, towards
the Sacré-Cœur and Place des Abbesses, lovers gather on the steps of the Butte, take a ride on the merry-go-
round and soak up the bohemian and artistic atmosphere of the area’s narrow cobblestone streets.

Le baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville (City Hall kiss). Robert Doisneau’s celebrated snapshot is immutably
associated with the city and sums up the romance of Paris perfectly. Lovers with their arms wrapped around
each other are still a common sight in the area. When the square in front of the Hôtel de Ville is free, the
traditional merry-go-round invites passers-by to take a romantic spin; in winter, lovers get their skates on to
perform nuptial dances on the open-air rink. In summer, when Paris Plage takes over the quays, scantily-clad
tanned bodies bask in the sun and the city turns into an urban beach resort where many a summer fling takes

Other accommodation for a romantic stay. Bed & Breakfasts in a Parisian home, apartment hotels and
furnished apartment rentals — the alternatives to hotels have also lined up a list of special offers for the
“month of romance” in partnership with the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Design hotels. While Paris is an architecturally historic city it is no less a contemporary one! For design
fans, the capital has numerous hotels which are cutting-edge in their interior architecture and concepts. Like
for example the Japanese inspired « love hotel », the Hôtel Amour, which has rooms specially designed for
moments of love. It provides the possibility of having a room for a few hours between 1.30pm and 6pm for
example. The ephemeral hotel Everland, designed by Swiss artists Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann, is
situated on the roof of the palais de Tokyo and provides an uninterrupted view of the Eiffel Tower. The five
hotels of the Hôtel particulier Montmartre have been designed by avant-garde artists : there is the
« Végétale » guest room which has the characteristics of a hanging garden, the « Collection » guest room
reminiscent of a 19th-century room of curios … Visit it like a museum !

Naughty museums. The sober and dignified exteriors of the Louvre and Orsay museums hide many a work
of art to make you blush. Suggestive paintings, sensual sculptures, explicit bronzes … all the pleasures of the
flesh are represented. To guide visitors along these paths of temptation, these two museums offer “visites
coquines” led by guide Jean-Manuel Traimond. The Galerie Les Larme d’Eros (Tears of Eros gallery) provides
both a literal and conceptual approach to eroticism: books of art, works for booklovers, illustrated poetry,
photos of pin ups from the 1930s ... are all harmoniously on show together. And each new publication of the
galleries publications brings about a new photographic or pictorial exhibition. A must visit! The Musée de
