                                                                                       Tate’s Supermarket
                                                                             Tate’s Supermarket is a family-owned supermarket
                                                                           known for “the best meats in the area,” featuring pro-
                                                                           duce, bakery, deli and grocery departments. Main
                                                                           office services include money orders, utility payments,
                                                                           gift cards, check cashing and lottery.
                                                                             The supermarket began as a meat-packing company
                                                                           in Arcadia in 1906. It operated there for 20 years before
                                                                           Albert, Carl, Frank and Anthony “Pete” Tate opened a
                                                                           store, The Original Tate Brothers, at 5 Franklin St.,
                                                                             Peter remained in Clymer and operated the store
                                                                           before turning it over to his three sons: George,
                                                                           Anthony Jr. and William “Skip” Tate.
                                                                             George and Anthony stayed in the business and
                                                                           helped create the present Tate’s Supermarket. Additions
                                                                           to the store were made in the 1950s and 1960s, and the
                                                                           brothers built and moved to the present location in
                                                                           December 1976, only to be flooded in July 1977. The
                                                                           store reopened three days later.
                                                                             Today, the business is owned by Denise Tate Packer
                                                                           and George Tate. Other family members are Stacie
                                                                           Tate, Mark Tate and Tom Thornton. Special employees
                                                                           with 10 years or more of service are Frank Petro, Betty
                                                                           Kelly, Dan Janosko, Bob Peace, Sharon Shulty, Carrie
                                                                           McAdoo, Cindy Polosky, Mary Jane Mattis, Lisa
                                                                           Nyland, Alice Greer, Wanda Myers, Levi Ankeny and
                                                                           Nancy Geary.
                                                                             “We have a strong commitment to continuing the Tate
                                                                           name and heritage,” said owner George Tate. “As an
                                                                           independent company, we strive to control our own
                                                                           destiny and be successful in endeavors, present and
                                                                             “We will never forget our heritage, where we began
