USO-Built Lausanne Conference 28 - 30 November 2002
SENIORS CONCLUSIONS
Saturday 30 November 13h00-14h30
Conclusions of the Conference
Significance for the participants
Darmstadt people were absent. According to Jan Graafmans, the USO-Built idea is
OK for them, but the domains does not fit to their expectations. They will develop a
similar school in environmental engineering. Cambridge and Strathclyde do not have
funding. Karlsruhe will join USO-Built (see minutes distributed by Kees Doevendans
at the meeting).
Why not do some reflections about user orientation? Some topics presentations on
our website contain some sentences on the user orientation, but this was never
discussed.
Students' expectations
This was the issue of the last hour of the conference. A questionnaire will be sent to
all USO-Built students to get a feedback about their interest and expectations.
Joint PhD programs in the framework of the European Association
of Architecture Education
The EAA have projects about the discovery of the EEE. A working group on doctoral
studies (Kees Doevendans is a member) sees USO-Built as an example of a
European doctoral school in Architecture. We are invited to participate in this WG.
Contact person is K. Doevendans.
Continuation - how to proceed?
Which offer for the future (lectures, conferences, else)
A questionnaire drafted by J.-B. Gay will be sent to all USO-Built participants to get a
feedback about their interest and expectations. The part on doctoral school should
be first sent to Jelena Petric.
Program funding
How CLUSTER participants are funding USO-Built now? TUE is spending 30 k€ per
year. Other CLUSTER members should get the same, since USO-Built is a pilot
project accepted by CLUSTER. Support could also be obtained from EU. For this we
need clear goals.
The ERASMUS world document issued on July 17 can be obtained from
www.cordis.lu
USO-Built also fits with the aim of EU to link research and teaching. Therefore, it
could be a strong network getting EU Funding.

Program management
The website could be made more sexy, and more readily available to members for
modifications. This is not allowed by TUE, but another server could host our site.
Torino offers to redesign the site.
A long-term progression plan should be drafted to give us a track.
Next meetings
Will be held in Torino in mid-February. Will be organised together with an
international conference, but only if a minimum attendance is granted.
At this workshop, more time should be dedicated to students. We should also ask
participants to think about the users of their work before coming.
The next meeting could be in Stockholm or Cambridge.
Individual proposals
A 4 wire web is proposed by Jan Graafmans as a scheme linking the 4 IRUs.
Meeting closed at 14:40
