                      Gerontology at ULM
This certificate is offered is offered for anyone who has a Bachelor’s degree already and
would like a generalist certificate in gerontology. Students are required to complete 18
hours, 9 hours of required courses plus 9 hours of elective coursework. The required and
elective courses are listed below. Students have to qualify to be admitted into the
Graduate school to be eligible to complete this certificate.

REQUIRED COURSES FOR CERTIFICATE IN GERONTOLOGY
(regardless of type of certificate)
                   Gerontology 5010 - Biology of Aging
                   Gerontology 5012 - Social Gerontology
                   Speech/Gerontology 5026 - Communication in Gerontology
                   OR
                   Counselor Education - 6050A - Counseling the Elderly

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR GENERALIST CERTIFICATE
    9 Semester hours of Gerontology Electives. (Each student’s credentials will be
    evaluated by the Department Head at the time of admission)

              Gerontology 4011 - Social Work with the Elderly      - 3 hours
              Gerontology 4025 - Seminar in Death & Dying          - 3 hours
              Gerontology 4030 - Elder Abuse                       - 3 hours

              Gerontology 5045 - Ethnic and Cultural Variations in
                                     Service Delivery              - 3 hours
              Gerontology 5067 - Programs and Public Policy         - 3 hours
              Gerontology 5068 - Programs and Services in
                                    Gerontology                     - 3 hours
              Gerontology 5075 - Research in Gerontology            - 3 hours
