How long does it take to complete the ride?
(MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION)
Completing the Century route (100 miles) in 5 hours indicates an average speed of 20 mph. Variables
such as wind, hills and time off the bike (i.e., rest stop areas) can greatly detract from an average, as it is
a time-based figure. Remember that this is a tour, not a race. Ride at your own pace, and above all,
have fun! The speeds listed below refer to common “riding” speeds. You can do the math according to
the mileage route you’re riding. Go on training rides to develop your speed and then your stamina.
19-23 mph = Fast Speed Example: Riders on the 75 mile route,
16-18 mph = Fast Recreational Clip pedaling 15 mph, will finish in 5 hours
13-15 mph = Enthusiastic Pace plus (add the time spent off the bike at
10-12 mph = Slower, Social Pace rest stops).
Important:
We do not provide transportation back to the Fairgrounds on Saturday, for those 2-day
riders who want to ride on Saturday only. You must make your own arrangements.

WHY YOU RIDE. WHERE YOUR PLEDGE MONEY GOES.
What is multiple sclerosis?
MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS
consists of the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves. Surrounding and protecting the nerve fibers of
the CNS is a fatty tissue called myelin, which helps nerve fibers conduct electrical impulses.
In MS, myelin is lost in multiple areas, leaving scar tissue called sclerosis. These damaged areas are also
known as plaques or lesions. Sometimes the nerve fiber itself is damaged or broken.
Myelin not only protects nerve fibers, but makes their job possible. When myelin or the nerve fiber is
destroyed or damaged, the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain is
disrupted, and this produces the various symptoms of MS.
Symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from person to person and from time to time in the same
person. For example, one person may experience abnormal fatigue, while another might have severe
vision problems. A person with MS could have loss of balance and muscle coordination, making walking
difficult; another person with MS could have slurred speech, tremors, stiffness, and bladder problems.
While some symptoms will come and go over the course of the disease, others may be more lasting.
What is the National MS Society doing?
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society funds more research and offers more programs for people with MS
and their families than any other voluntary healthcare organization in the world. Chapters nationwide
deliver services and provide comprehensive and empowering programs to a population of more than a
million people – individuals with MS, their families and their health care providers. They also raise
awareness about the disease; and organize fundraising efforts around the world, like the Bike MS Ride,
to make all of these efforts possible.
Some of the local Programs & Services that your
pledge money supports:
What you Bike pledges
Advocacy Information & Referral
help to support Aquatics Knowledge is Power
Equestrian Therapy Lending Library
Family Day Equipment Loan Closet
Financial Aid Newly Diagnosed Program
Friendly Listener Educational Conferences
Gateway to Wellness Support Groups
Respite Care
What can you do?
We don’t yet know the cause or have a cure for this debilitating disease, but what we do have right now
is hope. Because of people like you, who have supported our events and raised money; we have seen
major breakthroughs in the last 10 years that have produced several treatments for people with MS. So
you see… you are already making a difference! More has been accomplished to fight MS in the last decade
than in the preceding century, and this new century will see our victory!
Early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can make a difference for people with
multiple sclerosis. Learn about your options by talking to your health care professional and contacting
the National MS Society at: NationalMSsociety.org or 1-800-fight MS.
The National MS Society helps people affected by MS by funding cutting edge research, driving change
through advocacy, facilitating professional education and providing programs and services designed to
help people with MS and their families move their lives forward.
