TANIKA INLAW A FAIR DEMOCRAT FOR STATE
SENATE 27th DISTRICT MANHATTAN
My name is Tanika Inlaw. I am an educator, community outreach worker,
educational advocate and mother. I was born and raised in New York City and I am a
product of our public education. I live on the upper west side of Manhattan with my
two children. I graduated from P.S. 171 Patrick Henry Preparatory School, Manhattan
East (middle school), Fiorello LaGuardia H.S. of Performing Arts (drama major), SUNY
Purchase (1996), and received a Master’s of Science in Education - graduating Magma
Cum laude (2008) from Hunter College and inducted into Kappa Delta Pi honor society.
I had a career in broadcast journalism working at ABC’s daytime talk show “The
View” and ABC News radio. However, I scaled back my professional career to focus on
my growing family.
I began my public service career as an elected district leader and working with
my husband as he made an attempt to run for judge in 2005. That’s when I discovered
my passion to advocate for the underrepresented. I continue my public service as a
teacher in the New York City public schools system fiercely advocating for children.
My intense advocacy was notable and I was courted to be the president of the NAACP.
As leader of the NAACP I advocated to decrease over crowded schools, increase home
ownership opportunities, rent control and stabilization and I also lobbied to increase
minimum wage. Currently, I am organizing working parents to protest against after
school program cuts - a casualty of New York City’s recent budget cuts. I have a strong
passion for social justice and want to eliminate the seemingly high-grade legalized
fraudsters and make elections fairer. I feel that limiting political spending would result
in the middle class not feeling shut out of the political process. Very often we see
millions of dollars being raised and are intimidated to even try to enter the political
arena. I believe in the old adage that our politicians should be chosen of the people by
the people and for the people. I want to amplify the voice of regular voters and engage
everyone in making policies. Teachers, nurses, social workers, police or security
officers, doorman, transit workers, mother’s, clerical aids, post officers workers, city
workers and anyone else who desires to make the laws that we have to follow.
I wish to expand my advocacy to the state level by becoming the state senator for
the 27th district. In Albany I will continue to fight progressively for New York City to
have:
Affordable health care
Affordable Housing
Education/ After School Enrichment Centers and Anti-bullying
Environmental issues (hydraulic fracturing)
Animal Rights
Marriage equality
Living wage and equal pay
Make Elections Fair
I want to continue my work as an advocate fighting for causes that affect our
community.
Sincerely,
Tanika Inlaw
