                         STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Willie Barron is a lively and outgoing young man in the 12th grade. Willie attends
Ribault High School and is successfully completing the International
Baccalaureate Program which is world renown for its rigorous college prep
requirements. Willie is the Senior Class president and well respected within his
school. It really is a joy to see a young man balance so may different aspects of
his life. Currently his goal is to get rich so he can buy a classy, stylish car. This
dream is closely becoming a reality with his hard work, dedication, and
perseverance. Although you and I know that we can’t buy happiness, having
TSIC Director financial goals will drive Willie to a positive future with unlimited opportunities!

Leah Barker His mentor, Cyril Traeye, has been a huge support in his life. Cyril has been his
mentor since the 7th grade and travels every week from the Southside to Ribault
lbarker@cisjax.org High to see his “almost adult” mentee. They get along great and Cyril expressed
the importance of sticking by Willie even when he changed schools across town.
AFL Director Their relationship is fun but Cyril is a man who will make sure Willie keeps
grounded! Cyril believes in the power of mentoring so much that this year he has
Keto Porter taken on another student at Ribault so there is a smooth transition once Willie
graduates. The two boys have even met and it’s neat to see their peer mentoring

VOLUNTEER DAY
In October, Achievers for Life Mentors and Students
gathered to spend a Saturday morning cleaning up the
neighborhood around Matthew Gilbert Middle School on the
Eastside. They walked up and down 6 blocks that were
littered in trash. In those six blocks, the pairs picked up six
full bags of trash which for most people would equal about 3
weeks of garbage. When asked about their learning
experience from the service activity, the students saw the
importance of taking care of their environment and that they
would think before they threw something on the ground! One
of the missions of Communities in Schools is that the
children we serve will in turn serve their community and
become giving people themselves. A big thank you to
Stephanie Lentini, Sean McGhee, and Janika Brice for
participating with their mentee! Also, the next day student
from Douglas Anderson and several mentors volunteered for the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra during
their family fun day! Thank you to Daniel Fuchs, Maria Copeland, Jinky Brown, and Tim Hunt for your
service! It was such a fun event to help host!

We hope that you will participate in our next service day this spring! Look out for an email update in February
for this upcoming opportunity.

BUSINESS LEADERS IN GIVING
This year several businesses and corporations have stepped up to the plate to
dedicate employee time for mentoring at Duval County Schools. We have
established two new major partnerships with the following groups: CSX and Unison.
CSX Transportation has partnered with United Way to give time to raising student
performance through Achievers for Life at 6 area middle schools. Unison/GE has
partnered with Take Stock in Children and they are dedicated to attract even more mentors and fundraising
efforts this school year!
The following offices have been faithful in giving and growing their time
devoted to mentoring Jacksonville’s youth and we are looking forward to
continuing this relationship in the 2010-2011 school year and beyond with the
following groups: Bank of America, City of Jacksonville, Duval County Public
Schools, State Farm, JEA, and the Department of Environmental Protection.

iMentorJax is a social outlet to recruit and engage young professionals in Jacksonville to be leaders in
mentoring. These adults are active in their community and look for ways to inspire other to get involved by
bringing up tomorrow’s youth. February 24th, iMentorJax is sponsoring a “Birdies for Charity” event to raise
money for Take Stock in Children at the Aloft Hotel on Southside Blvd. A $25 ticket will get each person into
the event, a t-shirt, and an opportunity to win several grand prize drawings! To purchase tickets, call Lauren
