     Every word is true
What is the Bible? Why do
we study it?
 The Bible is:
 A collection of books written by
different men over a long period
    of time about God's relationship
    with man.

                                       2
What is the Bible? Why do
we study it?
 The Bible is:
 Divided into two main sections.
 The Old Testament describes God's
       relationship with man before Christ
       came to earth.
 The New Testament describes Christ's
       work here and it's consequences.

                                              3
What is the Bible? Why do
we study it?
 The Bible is:
 True: The Bible is inspired, the very
    words came from God's mouth.
That means the men who wrote it
were guided by God's Holy Spirit to
    write the truth.

                                        4

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness: That the man
of God may be perfect, throughly
    furnished unto all good works.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living
and powerful, and sharper than any
two-edged sword, piercing even to the
division of soul and spirit, and of joints
and marrow, and is a discerner of the
thoughts and intents of the heart.

                                                6

 The people who copied the Bible were
      careful to make no mistakes
           Revelation 22:18-19 "I warn everyone who
hears the words of the prophecy of this
book: if anyone adds to them, God will
add to that person the plagues described
in this book; if anyone takes away from the
words of the book of this prophecy, God
will take away that person's share in the
tree of life and in the holy city, which are
            described in this book."

It is the best selling book in the whole world!!!

                                                                     9
What is Bible Prophecy?
In the very beginning of time, when God created the earth, God
spoke to His people directly. He spoke to Adam in the Garden of
Eden and He spoke to Abraham, Noah and others also.

Later, He spoke through prophets. These were usually very good
men who did what God wanted. God told them what they should
say to the people. The people were supposed to listen to these
prophets, just as though God had spoken to the people Himself.

Sometimes, when the prophets told the people about events that
would happen in the future, which God had inspired them to say,
the prophets themselves didn’t even know what God meant. But
they were faithful men, and they told the people exactly what
God told them to tell the people.

                                                                  10
What is Bible Prophecy?
God also told these prophets to write down the things they were
telling the people. This way all the things God said would be
recorded for all time, for all people.

If the prophets had not written these things down, we wouldn’t
know anything about Jesus, or the creation of the world, or all the
wonderful stories we learn about in the Bible.

Even though the Old Testament has stories going back thousands
of years, God wanted us to know about the history of the world
and the people who lived then. He told us we needed to know
these things so that we would know Him and so that we would
know Jesus.

                                                                  11
What is Bible Prophecy?
Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible. Moses was a great
prophet. He told God’s chosen people that God would deliver
them from the slavery of Egypt and that they would be His special
people. Did that come true? YES!

Moses also told us that God told Abraham he would have many
descendents, more descendants than the stars in the sky. Did that
come true? YES!

Many prophets foretold that God would send a Messiah to the
world. The prophets had no idea about who Jesus was, but they
wrote down everything that God told them to about Jesus. Did
that come true? YES!

                                                                12
What is Bible Prophecy?
Let’s do an activity that will help us to
understand just how difficult it must have
been for all the different men who lived at
different times and in different places to
have all written prophecies about the
same things, yet they all agreed with each
other.

How The Bible Was
  Written Down
        The Bible was not originally
        written in book form. Paper
was not developed yet. At first,
people wrote in clay, in rock or
        on fibers like papyrus. Then
        they began making long strips
        of papyrus or parchment, rolling
        them up as scrolls.

                                      16
How The Bible Was
  Written Down
       Stone

       The first permanent writing surface
was stone. In the Bible, the first
Reference to writing is to the Ten
       Commandments, which were
Written on stone. The first pen
       was a chisel.

                                        17

       Clay Tablets

       In ancient Babylonia clay for
writing was shaped into thin, flat,
       rectangular bricks. Words were
pressed into the soft clay with a
       wedge-shaped stylus, and the
clay then baked in the sun.
       Archaeologists have found whole
       “libraries” of these clay tablets.

                             Papyrus

Before the pyramids were built, the
                               Ancient Egyptians had learned to
Make papyrus paper from the pith
(or inner stalk) of Nile papyrus reeds,
which grew in marshy areas around
Egypt. Still wet, the thick stems were
Laid out in rows on top of each other
And beaten until they melded together
                               into a flat paper surface.
(Our word “paper” comes from “papyrus.”) When this sheet had dried
in the sun, it could be written on. Papyrus was expensive, but it could
be re-used by washing or by scraping. Egyptian pens were brushes
made from reeds, and ink was made from plants and insects.

                                                                   19

      Waxed Boards

Writing boards were made from pieces
Of wood or ivory covered with wax.
They were used by the Assyrians,
      Greeks, and Romans. Two boards
      Were sometimes hinged together.
Any pointed stick made a pen.

       Leather

The skins of sheep, goats, calves,
       and antelopes were dried, scraped,
and cleaned to make a smooth
       material called parchment. (The
       Hebrew word for book means
       “scrape.”) Then the skins were
stretched and beaten flat, ready for
       writing on.
Pens were made from reeds, with
one end cut to a sloping edge and
       then split.

Would you like to make your own scroll?

                                          30
          The Jewish Scribes
  The Jewish scribes were
important people because
they were often the only
people who could read and
write. One of their jobs
was to make copies of Old
Testament scrolls. Each
word had to be written out
by hand. To make sure that
each scribe understood the
importance of his work, and
to stop him making
mistakes, careful rules were
followed.

                               31
          The Jewish Scribes
For example:
Each day he had to start
his work with prayer
The name of God had to
be left blank, to be filled in
later by a different scribe
using a “purer” ink.
At the end of a section of a
book, the scribe counted
the lines, the words and the
letters in the original and
checked them with his copy.
He also found and checked
the middle word of each
section.

                                 32

                          33
From Scrolls
  To Books
   Scrolls were cumbersome (awkward and
heavy) to carry, and it was time-
consuming to find a short Bible passage
 on such a long scroll.
   In the second century Christians
collected together the books of the
New Testament. They were probably the
first people to do away with the scroll.
Instead, they hit on the idea of collecting
together several sheets of papyrus or
parchment, folding them in half, sewing
along the fold, and then adding more
folded sheets. This was the beginning of
the modern book. It was called a codex.

                                           34
The Printing Press
              For centuries, making
copies of the Bible was a
            very tedious and slow
            process.
              But something very
            important was invented in
            1450 that would greatly
            affect the history of the
            Bible.
              In Germany, a man
            named Johann Gutenberg
            invented the world’s first
            printing press.

                                   35
            The Printing Press
It took a few years before the press was ready to print a real book,
but by 1456 the world saw the first book ever to be printed by a
machine. What do you think that first book was?

If you guessed the Bible -

                     You’re correct!

                                                                   36
        The Language Issue
 That first Bible printed was in the Latin language.
 The Latin was a translation from the original scriptures which
were:
 Mainly Hebrew in the Old Testament

Mainly Greek in the new Testament

                                                                   37
      The Language Issue
Since the first printed Bible came out, the Bible
has been translated into hundreds of
                               languages.

It is very important that when the Bible is being translated that the
translators realize the importance of keeping God’s Word the way
God wanted it. They need to be just as careful as the scribes were.

3 Important Things For Translators To Remember:

                  DO NOT add anything
                  DO NOT miss anything
 DO NOT change the meaning

                                                                  38
The Illustrated
     Bible
            Very old Bibles were
          often made with very
          fancy pictures or
          drawings to make the
          Bible look beautiful.
          These Bibles were called
          Illuminated Bibles.
          They are very rare
          today, and would cost a
          lot of money.

End of Lesson 1
In this lesson we have learned
about the history of the Bible.
There is still much more to learn
about the Holy Word of God.

In next week’s lesson, we will talk
    more about the inspiration of
           God’s Word.
