UPHOLSTERER/DESIGNER: GLYN SMALLWOOD
Traditionally trained in the 70s and early 80s by master upholsterers. Glyn is a
real proponent of his craft
Now passionate about passing on his skill and has recently begun mentoring an
Glyn breathes new life into hundreds of pieces of furniture every year that
would otherwise find their way to the skip or bonfire
Glyn’s workshop is an Aladdin’s cave of antique textiles, remnants, tapestries,
buttons and trimmings
Glyn is very flexible in the way he works and will reupholster a loved item of
furniture, design a bespoke piece or offer a selection from his own Smallwood
Glyn loves to strip down old pieces and admire the workmanship of
upholsterers from the past. He sometimes finds notes from upholsterers (a
tradition amongst upholsterers) or a name and date carved into the frame.
Upholstery is a traditional craft with tremendous green credentials
To recycle a piece of furniture is the responsible thing to do but from it you can
create a beautiful bespoke piece of furniture that is truly individual
Glyn is inspired by the fine tailoring of Savile Row and the timeless attention to
detail of fashion designers such as Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent when he
cloaks the frames.
