- What are ‘characteristics’?
- What are people really like?
o characteristic = distinctive qualities or traits/attributes of a person or thing
o What are some different characteristics (positive and negative) based on a
puppy, not a person!
Input (including modeling or demonstration):
- think/pair/share
o What are five of your characteristics?
o Why? Justify your choices.
o What are some characteristics you have in common with your partner?
Check for Understanding:
- recap of characteristics with class
o class discussion using T-chart positive/negative
o thumbs up/down/side do you agree (positive/negative)

Check for Understanding (continued)
- short discussion of negative characteristics, and appropriate terminology
- ask students to give an example of one of their characteristics, with a justifying example
- ask for thumbs up if students have the same characteristic themselves
- repeat until several different characteristics (positive and negative?) have been covered
Application:
- teacher to explain method for completing worksheet
- explanation should give example(s) of characteristic(s), how to explain/justify them, and
to cite an example from the book
- students to complete worksheet
Consolidation/Closure:
- tell students that worksheet will be completed in the following lesson
- results will be taken up as a class discussion – eg. Who got the same characteristics for
the characters?
- worksheets to be marked by the teacher
