Bits and Pieces II
Overview
Now we look at dividing a fraction by a fraction.
For letter A Rasheed and Ananda are making
they make with the given amount of ribbon.
1. ½ a yard of ribbon
since we need 1/6 of a
yard to make each
2. With ¾ of a yard of
ribbon you could get 4
1/6 of a yard for each
3. With 2 2/3 yards of
ribbon you could get 16
1/6 of a yard of ribbon
to make.
Letters B and C has us work through some more
problems.
Ananda uses 2/3 of a yard to make bows.
1. 4/5 ÷ 2/3 = 1 1/5 bows

2. 1 ¾ ÷ 2/3 = 2 5/8 bows

3. 2 1/3 ÷ 2/3 = 3 ½ bows

C – just the numbers
1. ¾ ÷ 2/3 = 9/8 or 1 1/8

2. 1 ¾ ÷ ½ = 14/4 = 3 ½

3. 2 ¾ ÷ ¾ = 11/3 = 3 2/3
What is the algorithm and how does it apply.
Letter D – a/b ÷ c/d = a/b x d/c
To divide by a fraction you multiply by the reciprocal of the fraction.

E – Elisha divides by getting a common denominator. Elisha is absolutely correct.
When dividing fractions we could get common denominators. This would give us the
same answer as multiplying by the reciprocal.
Review
• To divide a fraction by a fraction you multiply
by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
• Do not use the reciprocal of the first fraction.
