"Super Summer Theatre in Las Vegas"
Super Summer Theatre in Las Vegas Famous for bright lights, never-ending action, flash and glamour, Las Vegas is a playground for visitors from all across the globe. With a short 15 mile drive west of the city, another type of bright lights and action are underway. Super Summer Theatre is celebrating its 37th season with the launch of the 2012 performance schedule. Super Summer Theatre takes place at picturesque Spring Mountain Ranch Park, within an outdoor theatre venue set in the Blue Diamond and Red Rock Canyon area. The park elevation is approximately 3750 feet and therefore generally the climate is 10-15 degrees cooler than Las Vegas Valley. This area has a long and interesting history beginning with the early settlers choosing this location due to all of the natural springs offering an abundance of water, a rare commodity in the middle of a dry, hot desert. With over 500 acres, a working ranch was in operation and had various owners throughout the decades including millionaire Howard Hughes and German actress Vera Krupp. At one point in time, it was a retreat for celebrities and very wealthy visitors. The elevated stage area is set amongst towering mountains, surrounded by the natural beauty of the desert including cactus, wildflowers, red rock formations and wildlife. The plays begin at 8:00 p.m. When gates open at 5:00 p.m. a long line of cars arrive with attendees laden with picnic baskets, coolers, blankets and pillows. With a short ten minute walk through a winding entrance to the park, the surrounding beauty of nature is breathtaking as the sun begins to set behind the mountains. Seating consists of a large flat, grassy area framed by trees and hills where people choose a spot, lay the blanket out, unpack the picnic baskets and ice chests, and begin their feast under the stars. The outdoor picnic opportunity in the cool mountains is one of the main attractions of Super Summer Theatre. Each season generally has four Broadway-style or well-known classic plays scheduled for Super Summer Theatre. Currently “Crazy for You” is being performed with “Oliver” following in July and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” in August. The actors provide professional quality performances and the community provides contributions and sponsorships to maintain the ever popular Super Summer Theatre activities season after season.
