									2002 Community Service Scholars

2002-03 marks the tenth year that IUPUI has funded a service based scholarship program.
During 2002-03, $125,750 was awarded to 61 students who demonstrated a commitment to
community service.

Community Service Leaders
Community Service Leaders volunteer weekly at community sites as part of their scholarship
agreement.

Tiffany Boyer A senior in the School of Liberal Arts volunteering at Wishard Hospital's
Fathers & Families Resource/Research Center in marketing activities and community
outreach.
Kylene Connolly A Sophomore in the University College assisting with clerical work at the
Volunteers of America.
Keya Dave A Sophomore in the School of Science volunteers at the India Association of
Indianapolis in event planning and administration.
David Fleischhacker A Sophomore in the School of Liberal Arts assists in fundraising and
marketing at the Marion County Commission on Youth.
Philip Foust A Sophomore in the University College works in Senator Richard Lugar's
Office on various projects and clerical tasks.
Jason Gabehart A Junior in the Kelley School of Business volunteers with the Police
Athletic League.
Evelyn Hovee A Sophomore in the School of Liberal Arts works with the Southeast
Neighborhood Development Association in research projects and writing for the monthly
newsletter.
Jama Riley A Sophomore in the University College edits a newsletter and researches and
presents programs at the Eiteljorg Museum.
Tricia Stubblefield A Junior in Continuing Studies assisting in event planning and clerical
tasks at Keep Indianapolis Beautiful.
Aaron Townsend A Sophomore in the School of Engineering at George Washington
Community School assists with K and preschool programs.
Melissa Williams A Sophomore in the School of Science at the Children's Museum of
Indianapolis as a gallery interpreter in the science works section.
Joseph Zielinski A Junior in the Kelley School of Business at the Indiana State Museum as a
seminar and collections assistant.
Theresa Zmijewski A Junior in the School of Allied Health at Crossroads Rehabilitation
Center working with an occupational therapist.
Freshman Service Scholars
Freshman Service Scholars provided tutoring to students at IPS George Washington Middle
School as part of a service learning component to an introductory psychology class.

Alisha Borcherding Graduated from Zionsville Community High School in Indiana. She is
active in outreach teaching children with special needs to experience horseback riding and
involved in 4-H club activities.
Anna Curry Graduated from Crawfordsville High School in Indiana where she was involved
in outreach through school clubs. She also participated in church mission trips.
Cole Duncan Graduated from R-S Central High School, Rutherfordton, NC where he tutored
peers in science. He was a volunteer at St. Vincent's Hospital, at elementary school, and
community health projects.
Stacy Geisler Graduated from North White High School, Monon, IN where she participated
in an after school tutoring program and church youth group activities.
Christine Glasheen Graduated from Advanced Training Institute, Carmel, IN. She
volunteered at Conner Prairie as an interpreter, at the Agape Therapeutic Riding Center
assisting children with disabilities to horseback ride, and 4-H activities.
Elizabeth Leverett Graduated from Walnut Grove Christine School, Carmel where she was
involved in community service at local venues. She volunteered reading to children at the
Indianapolis Public Library and taught Sunday school at her church.
Christina Lund Graduated from South Putnam High School, Greencastle, IN. She
volunteered with Special Olympics and in a community singing group.
George Maxwell Graduated from Central Christian Schools, Omaha, NE where he
participated in a service project to Mexico. He volunteers at a homeless shelter and is a
Salvation Army bell ringer.
Tracy Nielsen Graduated from North Judson-San Pierre High School in Indiana where she
participated in Key Club outreach and leadership roles in student organizations, as well as
fundraisers for the American Cancer Society.
Sonia Oswald Graduated from Bethany Christian in Goshen, IN. She has volunteered
repairing houses in her community and for Habitat for Humanity, as well as nursing home
visits and tutoring in after school programs.
Kory Risner Graduated from North Judson-San Pierre High School in Indiana where he was
involved in outreach through the National Honor Society. He also volunteered with a Cub
Scout troop.
Donya Stipcak Graduated from Indiana's Martinsville High School where she participated in
community outreach through school programs. She volunteers at a nursing home and at
community fundraisers.
Christopher Stringer Graduated from Plainfield High School in Indiana. He has
volunteered for several years through the Plainfield Police Department's outreach projects,
including with Toys for Tots.
Claire Strodtbeck Graduated from Heritage Christian School in Indianapolis. She has
volunteered at Wheeler Mission for the homeless and assisted in a tutoring program for
children.
Service Learning Assistants
Service Learning Assistants completed a service learning course and were chosen by a
faculty member to assist in a current service learning course.

Stephen Cox Assists Frederick Bein, Geography in "Introduction to Human Geography" at
the Indianapolis Senior Citizen Center. Students interview an elder person about their historic
migration.
Neal McGuffey Assists Greg Lindsey, SPEA, with the Greenway Service Learning Project,
collecting and analyzing data related to the use of greenway trails in Indianapolis, preparing
reports and presentations for Indy Parks and other state agencies and overseeing service
learning students involved in the project.
Victor Perez Assists Gustavo Garcia, Spanish Department, in a Spanish literature class, at
the Indianapolis Senior Citizen Center. Students will teach Spanish to a senior, along with
Hispanic cultural information and literary topics.
Kelly ProbstAssists Robert Barr, Geology, with students in G107 environmental classes who
participate in the service learning ARBOR Project along the White River restoring the
floodplain.
Angela Swift Assists Kathy Johnson, Psychology, in a Cognition class at All Saints Catholic
School where students work with K-3rd graders in a service project related to reading and
language arts.
John Webber Assists Robert Barr, Geology, with students in G107 environmental classes
who participate in the service learning ARBOR Project along the White River restoring the
floodplain.
America Reads Team Leader Scholars
America Reads Team Leaders support the America Reads Tutoring Program by providing
administrative and leadership assistance at tutoring sites.

Jordan Amonette Herron School of Art, assists at the Stringtown tutoring site.
Sarah Baize Psychology, assists at George Washington Community School.
Michelle Blackwell History, assists at Hawthorne Community Center.
Edgar Holmes III Criminal Justice, assists at Jumpstart tutoring site.
LaLakesha Holmes Communication, assists the program at the Christamore House.
Erin Kramer School of Education, assisted the program at Stout Field Elementary School.
