Course Title : Study and Thinking Skills III. Prerequisite : English PLUS IV. Course Description : This course is a study of communicative and thinking skills. It deals with the development of critical understanding of language gearing towards expressing oneself in various situations. V. Rationale : English, being a world language, is an indispensable tool subject in the curriculum. Its manifold importance is underscored by the four skills appended to it, namely: thinking, reading, speaking, and writing skills. These four skills are presented in an interrelated and integrative, sequential patterns. English 1 focuses specifically on students’ communicative and thinking skills for academic study. VI. Course Objectives : General Objective: Develop the use of the English language as a tool for the expression of thought by utilizing the effective language-learning strategies. Specific Objectives: Cognitive: 1. Comprehend oral and written materials ranging from general interest to specific discipline. 2. Classify sentences according to structure, their rules and application in oral and written communications. 3. Identify the nuances of composition writing. Affective: 1. Appreciate the importance of communication skills in various situations. Psychomotor: 1. Organize information efficiently in the form of outlines, charts, etc. , both for the materials read and materials to be written. 2. Summarize and paraphrase materials read. 3. Interpret and construct non-prose texts. 4. Write unified and coherent paragraphs/essays using different rhetorical devices.
