The Chambersburg Quality Store was not designed to simply give away stuff. It’s purpose was to create a TANGIBLE reinforcement.
We want people to keep doing what we want them to do. We must monitor the results of their procedural behavior. When giving another person a pat on the back, a good morning by name or a quick wave hello its a SOCIAL reinforcer and recognition that their not just a house plant. Giving some easy money away is a TANGIBLE reinforcement. They can touch it, put it in their pocket, take it home, save some up and then go buy something at the Quality Store. If “The Boss” gives you a wave hello nobody writes home about it but if the boss gives you a engraved plaque for a great job the receiver tells the world. They call their spouse, their mother, take pictures and smile for months. A little piece of paper called EASY MONEY has the same effect as giving a person a real American five dollar bill. Give them the wave, the hello, the pat on the back and toss in a Tangible Reinforcer called EASY MONEY. People ask me for money most every day. I hand them a real one dollar bill and they give it back, “ no, not that ” they say! “ The other money”. Now does this work for every person? Absolutely not. Neither do speeding tickets but they work for most. If an associate follows procedures, comes to work on time, keeps their bargain with housekeeping give them some money. If you don’t reinforce good behavior it will go away. If you don’t reinforce little steps they will never take big ones. If you don’t do anything, if you don’t tell them that you appreciate them, if you don’t tell them when they do a good job what happens? They assume you don’t like them and their doing a bad job. Whats your FOCUS today?
