News for Friends of the Larose Civic Center February 2003
Valentine’s Dinner Successful
“A Love Affair for the Endowment,” our Valentine’s Day Supper was a great success! The evening
generated in excess of $2,000 for our Larose Regional Park Endowment Fund. Many thanks go out to
members of Les Artistes du Bayou for providing an exceptional art show, as well as to performing artist
Trudy Angelette, Donna Lefort, Allison Kenning, Jeff Chouest, and Eaan Bruce.
$10 Plan Ballots Are Out
Enclosed in this envelope is a list of projects for you to consider for the 2003 $10 Plan program.
This list of projects has been approved by the Board for placement on the ballot. Of course, the projects
that actually get funded will be those chosen by $10 Plan donors. We have been operating under this
plan since 1990.
Whichever project is voted #1 will be undertaken when we have collected enough money to fund
it. Project #2 will be undertaken when project #1 is completed and/or when there is sufficient funding
collected for project #2.
$10 Plan money is considered “non-operational” dollars and are controlled by $10 Plan donors,
as opposed to “operational funds” which are controlled by the Board of Directors.
Some of you who receive this newsletter are not $10 Plan members – and that’s ok. You are
either Corporate donors or just interested citizens. If this is the case, you are being sent this ballot for
informational purposes only. We do not expect more than you are already giving. Even though the $10
Plan is an organized donor effort, we realize that many people give in many other ways.
Remember that we will withhold 15% of donated $10 Plan funds to be used toward maintaining
facilities built previously by the $10 Plan. With these funds we do routine maintenance on the two large
pavilions so that they are well maintained for community use. These funds also pay the electric bill for the
walking track, which was one of the first $10 Plan projects ever completed.
Family Fun Fest to be Spring Highlight

your favorite family food booths will be showcased at this event. The festival will offer numerous sports
tournaments including Bayou Lafourche Pirogue Races as well as our KIDS-FUN activities. Of course
there will also be an old-fashioned midway and swinging dance music the entire weekend. Our popular
fishing rodeo will again be a highlight of the weekend.
We are pleased to give you the line-up of music for Family Fun Fest weekend:

LCC to be Part of Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial Celebration
Sunday, March 16 will mark a historic celebration in Larose as our community celebrates the
bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase. The Bayou Lafourche Heritage Celebration, a free day-long
celebration will begin with a French Mass at 10 AM at Our Lady of the Rosary Church. Events planned
on the Park grounds (immediately following mass) include talks on historical aspects of the purchase as
well as artistic presentations exploring the cultural traces of Francophone heritage found in today’s Cajun
culture. Cajun bands including Vin Bruce with La Bon Vie and Cajun Toujour will perform all day long
under our Cook’s Pavilion. Lecture demonstrations on the role of the accordion and fiddle within the
development of Cajun Music will be presented in our board room. Our gymnasium will host some major
events including a Louisiana History Quiz Bowl with competition between 8 grade Louisiana History
student teams of Larose-Cut Off and Golden Meadow Middle Schools. Especially interesting to local
residents will be an afternoon talk in the gym by Audrey Westerman, certified genealogical record
specialist, whose talk will focus on the settlers of Early Lafourche. Our lobby will host Les Artistes du
Bayou’s “Make-it and Take-it” tables, where for a nominal fee, locals and visitors alike can create their
own souvenirs to this state-wide celebration!
Our friends from Nova Scotia, who performed here several years ago, will return to sing at Mass
and perform in the gym as one of the afternoon’s events. And at 2 PM there will be tours conducted of
the historic Ducos home in Cut Off, built circa 1898 and located on spoils of historic Bayou Cut Off.
The day should be a great event, with good Cajun food being served in the Park at lunch time.
We are expecting many out-of-town guests so join in the fun of celebrating our Louisiana Birthday!!!
Swimming Pool Brings Excitement for Next Swim Season
There’s excitement around the pool complex at this time of year as we ready the facility for the
upcoming summer season. The pool facility is coming off of a great 2002 season under the direction of
the two Mary’s – Mary Duet and Mary Reynaud, with attendance, activities and revenues at a peak. The
newly constructed pool pavilion, fresh paint, and spruced up pool deck make for an attractive summer
area. Tables and lounge chairs have been purchased with money donated by a local swim enthusiast.
The ladies rest rooms are ready for outdoor party guests with decorative painting by local artist, Margaret
Of greatest interest to local swim fans is the probability of installing a solar heating system for the
pool sometime before the fall season. The heating will also benefit swim teams from South and Central
Lafourche High Schools. Funding initiatives for this project began in December, netting $5,000 to date.
Future fundraisers for the project include Teen dances, Sunday dinners, and enjoyable theme suppers.
Our next benefit for this project is a Sunday Lunch set for March 9 featuring Miss Louisiana, Casey
Crowder. Mark your calendar for a delightful lunch and an outing for a great cause!
