                                            Set up the Instrument

Prior to creating a job or entering any data, it is important that you
have a solid foundation for your measurements.

                                               1. Set up a tripod at a comfortable height so that it’s roughly level
and centered over the point you wish to occupy and step it into
                                                  place.

                                               2. Make sure a tribrach is attached to the instrument and place it
in the center of the clean tripod plate. Hand-tighten the
                                                  instrument in place.

                                               3. Press and hold the ON (PROG) button for 2 seconds to boot
                                                  up the instrument.

The instrument will power on and display your selected Start-up
Screen. If you are controlling the total station robotically, make sure
you have established communication with the instrument.
                                               4. Press the ESC button until you return to the TPS1200 Main
                                                  Menu screen.

                                               5. From the Main Menu, press the Shift + F12 button to access
the STATUS Level & Laser Plummet screen.

                                               6. If your instrument is equipped with a laser plummet and you
are using a non-optical tribrach, press the F6 (PAGE) button or
tap on the “Laser Plummet” tab.

                                               7. Make sure the Laser Plummet field is set to On and adjust the
                                                  Intensity as necessary.

                                               8. Press the F1 (CONT) button to save any changes and return
                                                  to the Main Menu.

                                           9. “Steer” the instrument over the center of the occupied point by
turning the tribrach’s leveling footscrews. Use the laser
plummet or the tribrach’s optical plummet to make sure the
instrument is centered over the point.

                                           10. Using the circular leveling bubble on the instrument as a guide,
adjust the tripod legs until the instrument is level.

                                           11. Press the Shift + F12 button to return to the STATUS Level &
                                               Laser Plummet screen.

                                           12. Check the plummet’s position over the occupied point and, if
necessary, loosen the tribrach from the tripod and re-center it
                                               over the point.

                                           13. Using the electronic level bubble on the Level screen as a
guide, adjust the tribrach’s footscrews to precisely level the
                                               instrument.

                                           14. Repeat Steps 12 and 13 until the instrument is level and
centered over the point. The tribrach should not be hanging
over the edge of the tripod plate and there should be enough
freedom in the leveling footscrews to re-adjust the tribrach if
                                               necessary.

                                           15. Remember to switch the Laser Plummet field to Off before
pressing F1 (CONT) to return to the Main Menu.

                                            Create a Job

Now that the instrument is properly set up, the next task is to create a
new job in the instrument’s database. This job will contain your known
points for the project as well as any points, lines or areas that you
                                           measure.

                                               16. From the Main Menu, select 3 Manage... to access the
                                                   TPS1200 Management screen.

                                               17. Select 1 Jobs to access the MANAGE Jobs screen.

The MANAGE Jobs screen displays all of the jobs that are currently
stored on the instrument’s CF Card. From this screen you can create
new jobs, edit or delete existing jobs and view the data from an
                                           individual job.

                                               18. Press the F2 (NEW) button to access the MANAGE New Job
screen and create a new job.

In the General tab of the MANAGE New Job screen:

                                               19. Enter a name for the job in the Name field. This field must be
completed; the next two are optional.

                                               20. If desired, enter any additional information about the job in the
Description fields, such as project number or date, and enter
your name or initials in the Creator field.

                                               21. The Device field remains set to CF Card.

                                               22. Once all of the general information has been entered, press
the F6 (PAGE) button to access the Codelist tab.

In the Codelist tab you can select a codelist from the instrument’s
System RAM and assign it to your job.

                                               23. If you wish to use a codelist, select it from the Codelist field.
                                                   Otherwise, select None.

                                               24. Press the F6 (PAGE) button to access the Coord System tab.

The Coord System tab allows you to assign a coordinate system from
the instrument’s System RAM to the job.

                                               25. If you wish to assign a coordinate system to the project, select
it from the Coord System field. Otherwise, select None. The
coordinate system’s properties are displayed but cannot be
                                                   edited in this screen.

                                               26. Press the F6 (PAGE) button to access the Avge tab.

The Avge tab is where you set your averaging parameters for the job.
This allows you to take multiple observations on the same point and
automatically average them if they fall within the specified tolerances.

                                               27. Select Average from the Averaging Mode field and Weighted
from the Method field. A weighted average is the most
common method but there are others available. If you do not
wish to compute averages, set the Averaging Mode field to
                                                   Off.

                                               28. Select TPS & GPS from the Points to Use field if you wish to
average all observations on the same point. If you only want
to average TPS or GPS measurements, you can select TPS
                                                   only or GPS only.

                                               29. Enter the averaging limits in the Avge Limit Pos/Ht fields.
Measurements that have the same Point ID and fall within
these tolerances will automatically be averaged together.

                                               30. Once the job has been properly set up, press the F1 (STORE)
                                                   button to save the job.

                                               31. When you return to the MANAGE Jobs screen, your new job
appears in the database. Highlight this job and press F1
                                                   (CONT).

Now that you have a new job created and properly configured, you can
create points in that job’s database. Whether you’re setting up on
known control points from an existing GPS survey or just assigning
(5000, 5000, 500) coordinates to your starting point, the instrument
needs to have a starting point in its database.

                                              32. From the Main Menu, select 3 Manage....

                                              33. Select 2 Data to access the MANAGE Data screen for the
                                                  active job.

Just as you can create, edit and delete jobs in the MANAGE Jobs
screen, you can create, edit and delete points in the MANAGE Data
                                           screen.

                                              34. Press the F2 (NEW) button.

                                              35. Enter the Point ID for the new point in the Point ID field and its
coordinates in the Easting, Northing and Ortho Ht fields.

Note: If you selected a coordinate system without an associated geoid
model in Step 25 you will be prompted to enter an Ellipsoidal Height.

                                              36. If you selected a codelist in Step 23, press the F6 (PAGE)
button to access the Code tab.

                                              37. Select the appropriate code in the Point Code field and enter
                                                  any attributes, if necessary.

                                              38. Once the coordinates and code information have been
entered, press the F1 (STORE) button to save the new point to
                                                  the job’s database.

The new point now appears in the MANAGE Data screen.

                                              39. Press the F2 (NEW) button to create another point, F3 (EDIT)

                                            Set Orientation

Now that you’ve created a job and at least one known point in that job,
the last step is to orientate the instrument.

                                               41. From the Main Menu, select 1 Survey.

                                               42. In the Survey Begin screen, make sure the Job, Coord
System, Codelist, Config Set and Reflector fields are set
appropriately. To change coordinate systems, press the F6
                                                   (CSYS) button.

                                               43. Once the job is properly defined, press the F3 (SETUP) button
to access the SURVEY Station Setup screen.
The SURVEY Station Setup screen is where you define how the
instrument will be orientated. You can set an azimuth, occupy two
known points or perform various resections. For this example, we’ll
                                           define an azimuth.

                                               44. Select Set Azimuth from the Method field.

                                               45. The Station Coord field defines the location of your occupied
point. In this case, you created a point in the new job’s
database (in Step 35), so select From Job. If you had a
separate job that contained your control points, you could
                                                   select From Fixpoint Job.

                                               46. Select the occupied point from the Station ID field.

                                               47. As long as the Station Coord field is set to From Job, the
Fixpoint Job field is irrelevant. However, if you set the
Station Coord field to From Fixpoint Job, select that control
job from the Fixpoint Job field.

                                               48. Press the F4 (SCALE) or F5 (PPM) buttons to review the
current scale factor and ppm settings.

                                               49. Once the orientation is properly defined, press the F1 (CONT)
                                                   button.

The Setup tab of the SETUP Set Stn & Ori screen is where you set the
                                           instrument’s orientation.

                                               50. Even if you’re defining an azimuth and there is only one point
in your job’s database (your occupied point), you still need to
enter a Point ID for the backsight. In this case, SmartWorx will
create a point 2 with the Reference point class at the
measured azimuth and distance. Enter a Point ID for the
backsight in the Backsight ID field.

                                               51. Enter your prism height in the Reflector Ht field.

                                               52. Sight the backsight and enter the desired azimuth in the
Azimuth field. You can press the F4 (Az=0) button to reset
                                                   the azimuth to due north.

                                               53. Press the F6 (PAGE) button to access the BS Info tab.
In the BS Info tab of the SETUP Set Sta & Ori screen:

                                               54. The Backsight ID field contains the previously entered Point
                                                   ID for the backsight point.

                                               55. If desired, select a code from your codelist to assign to the
backsight point in the Code field. The Code Desc field
                                                   updates automatically.

                                               56. Press the F6 (PAGE) button again to access the Stn Info tab.

                                               57. Review the information for your currently occupied point.

                                               58. Once the occupied and backsight point information has been
correctly entered, press the F6 (PAGE) button to return to the
                                                   Setup tab.

                                           To set the instrument’s orientation:

                                               59. Make sure the instrument is still sighting the backsight point,
the Azimuth field is still properly set and press the F2 (DIST)
button to double-check your backsight distance.

                                               60. When you are ready to set the orientation, press the F1 (SET)
button. You should receive a “Station and Orientation has
                                                   been set.” message.

                                               61. Press F4 (OK) to continue.

Once your station and orientation have been properly set, you’re
advanced to the Survey screen where you can begin taking additional
                                           measurements.

                                               62. Sight your target.

                                               63. Make sure the Point ID and Reflector Ht fields are set
                                                   appropriately.

                                               64. Press the F1 (ALL) button to record the current measurement.
The point will automatically be stored and the Point ID field
                                                   will increment.

This concludes the Basic Job Setup Quick Guide. For more
