Dewey Decimal Review
The Dewey Decimal System is used
to organize the nonfiction books in the
library. It was invented by Melvil
Dewey back in 1876 when he was
only 21 years old. He was sitting in
church when he came up with the
idea. He jumped up and almost
yelled “Eureka!”
Here are some other tidbits about
Melvil.
Melvil was extremely smart, organized,
and eccentric. As a child he loved
math.
When he was a boy, he took the money
he made doing odd jobs, and instead of
buying candy or toys, he bought a
dictionary.
Melvil developed a terrible cough
after he inhaled a lot of smoke
during a fire. He kept entering the
burning building in order to save
the books.
People either loved or hated Melvil.
Someone once said he was the most
resourceful librarian in the world.
However, someone else called him a
nauseating slobberer, and others called
him a gabbing idiot.
