# Combining Like terms

Document Sample

```					           Combining Like terms
Standard: PFA
Objective: I will be able to simplify algebraic expressions.
Vocabulary
Like Term: Terms with the same variable and
the same exact powers (Same last name)
EX. 2y and 4y are like terms
3x2 and 4x are not Why not?
Simplify: Get rid of parenthesis and combine like
terms
Steps
1.   Get rid of any multiplication signs in a term
(multiply all numbers and write variables to
a power)
Example 5∙a∙ 3 ∙a + 4( a∙a + 3)
15 a2 + 4( a2 + 3)
2. Put a one in front of any variable that doesn’t
have a coefficient
15 a2 + 4(1 a2 + 3)
3. Get rid of any parenthesis (Distributive Property)
15 a2 + 4(1 a2 + 3)
15 a2 + 4 a2 + 12
4. Underline any like terms with the same color
15 a2 + 4 a2 + 12
5. Combine like terms
19 a2 + 12
NOTICE: This is your solution! You are finished!
Try these:
A.) x + 2x + 4y + 6 x + 7y
B.) 4y2 + 4y – y2 + 6 + 6y
C.) 4(b + b + b + d)
D.) 7∙a∙a∙a + 3 + a
