MINUTES TO THE LAUDERDALE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING
MAY 31, 2012
STUDENT HEARINGS AT 4:00 P.M.
BOARD MEETING AT 5:00 P.M.
The Lauderdale County Board of Education met with the following members
present: Ralph Thompson, Chairman
Barbara Cornelius, Vice Chairman
Dan Beavers
Chad Holden
Daniel Patterson
A student hearing was held.
The following minutes were approved:

As recommended by Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mr. Holden, seconded by
Mrs. Cornelius and passed the Amended Annual Budget No. 1 for the fiscal year October 1,
2011—September 30, 2012.
The motion was made by Mr. Patterson, seconded by Mr. Beavers and passed as
recommended by Mr. Valentine to pay the following:
(A) Vendor: James Irby, P.C.

Minutes
Upon the recommendation of Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mr. Beavers,
seconded by Mr. Holden and passed for Lauderdale County High School to purchase a fence
around the football field. The cost of the fence will be $16,900.00 and will be paid from the
Lauderdale County Quarterback Club.
As recommended by Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mr. Beavers, seconded by
Mr. Holden and passed for Wilson High School to have the new gymnasium painted. The cost
will be $12,500.00 and will be paid from local school funds.
The motion was made by Mrs. Cornelius, seconded by Mr. Patterson and passed as
recommended by Mr. Valentine for Sara Lee Bakery Group to extend the current bread
contract for an additional twelve (12) months for the Lauderdale County Schools. The extended
contract dates will be July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013.

Upon the recommendation of Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mr. Holden,
seconded by Mr. Patterson and passed to provide an easement for a sidewalk at Brooks
Elementary School.
As recommended by Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mrs. Cornelius, seconded
by Mr. Patterson and passed for the Lauderdale County School System to adopt the revision
from the State Department of Education as part of our policy so students who received the
Credit-Based diploma this school year and in past years will have the option to continue to try

and hopefully pass additional portions of the AHSGE and qualify for one of the other diploma
endorsements other than Credit-Based.
The motion was made by Mr. Patterson, seconded by Mr. Holden and passed as
recommended by Mr. Valentine the following volunteer coaches for the 2012-2013 school year:
(A) Michael Bange girls basketball Brooks High School
(B) Sarah Oakley jv cheer coach Wilson High School
Upon the recommendation of Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mrs. Cornelius,
seconded by Mr. Patterson and passed for the following personnel to tutor the summer
reading programs at Cloverdale Elementary School and Rogers High School at the rate of
$25.68 per hour and will be paid from Title I funds:

As recommended by Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mr. Holden, seconded by

Extended School Year Program and /or participate in IEP Meetings during the
months of June, July, and August, 2012:

Extended school year service contracts will be paid from special education funds
at $25.68 per hour for tutoring services and current Board approved mileage rate for
travel (Not to exceed $2,000.00 per person).
The motion was made by Mr. Beavers, seconded by Mrs. Cornelius and passed as
recommended by Mr. Valentine the following bids:
(A) Bid # 2562 Paving parking lots at Central, Rogers and Wilson High Schools
(Opened May 31, 2012 @ 10:00 a.m.)

Upon the recommendation of Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mr. Beavers,
seconded by Mr. Holden and passed for Allen Thornton Career Technical Center
to apply for the Collision Repair Education Foundation Grant. The amount could be
up to $50,000.00.

As recommended by Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mr. Holden, seconded by
Mr. Beavers and passed for Lauderdale County High School to apply for the Dollar General
Literacy Foundation Grant. If the grant is received, our system could receive up to $4,000.00
for students in grades 7-12. The grant provides funding to local nonprofit libraries to help with
the implementation or expansion of summer reading for students. The program will target
students who are two grade levels below their current grade level and readers with disabilities.
The motion was made by Mr. Beavers, seconded by Mrs. Cornelius and passed as
recommended by Mr. Valentine the following trips for students:
(A) Brooks and Lexington High School students requests to attend the FBLA
National Conference/Competitions in San Antonio, Texas on June 28-July 3,
2012. There will be 5 female and 5 male students chaperoned by 2 Lauderdale
County Employees as follows:

Tisha Hanback Teacher Brooks High School
Expenses will be paid from local FBLA Funds and Perkins Funds.
(B) Brooks High School varsity volleyball team requests to attend volleyball camp
in Floyd, Georgia on July 19-21, 2012. There will be 13 female students
chaperoned by 1 Lauderdale County Employee as follows:

Expenses will be paid from local school funds and students attending the trip.

Expenses will be paid from local school funds and students attending the camp.
(G) Rogers High School varsity girls basketball team request to attend team camp in
Auburn, Alabama on June 16-19, 2012. There will be 11 female students
chaperoned by 2 Lauderdale County Employees as follows:

Tyler Mobley Teacher Rogers High School
Expenses will be paid from local school funds and students attending the camp.
(H) Rogers High School varsity and b-team boys basketball team requests to attend
team camp in Birmingham, Alabama on June 20-21, 2012. There will be 25 male
students chaperoned by 2 Lauderdale County Employees as follows:

21 female students chaperoned by 3 Lauderdale County Employees as follows:

Randall Martin Teacher Rogers High School
Expenses will be paid from local school funds and students attending the camp.
(J) Wilson High School varsity and junior varsity boys basketball team requests to
attend basketball camp in Birmingham, AL on June 15-17, 2012. There will be 20
male students chaperoned by 2 Lauderdale County Employees as follows:
Jeremy Pounders Teacher Wilson High School
Shawn Pierce Teacher Wilson High School
Students will miss no days of school. Expenses will be paid from local school
funds and students attending the camp.
(K) Central High School dance team requests to attend the Universal Dance
Association Team Camp in Memphis, Tennessee on June 11-14, 2012. There will be
12 female students chaperoned by 2 Lauderdale County Employees as follows:

Tonya Robb Young Bus Driver Central High School
Expenses will be paid from local school funds and students attending the trip.
Upon the recommendation of Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mrs. Cornelius,
seconded by Mr. Patterson and passed for the following trips for employees:
(A) The following employee requests to attend the Alabama Educational Technology
Conference in Trussville, Alabama on June 12-15, 2012:

Expenses will be paid from Special Education Funds.

As recommended by Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mr. Holden, seconded by
Mrs. Cornelius and passed for Matthew Cole, teacher and assistant varsity football coach,
assistant JV softball coach and 7th-8th grade boys basketball coach at Brooks High School to
resign from his positions as teacher, assistant varsity football coach, assistant JV softball coach
and 7th-8th grade boys basketball coach at Brooks High School effective at the end of the 2011-
2012 school year.
The motion was made by Mrs. Cornelius, seconded by Mr. Holden and passed as
recommended by Mr. Valentine for Darrell Lester, 12 mo./40 hr. per week custodian at Brooks
Elementary School to resign from his position as 12 mo./40 hr. per week custodian at Brooks
Elementary School, effective May 31, 2012.
Upon the recommendation of Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mr. Beavers,
seconded by Mr. Holden and passed for the following resignations for coaching
positions effective at the end of the 2011-2012 school year:
Kim Meeks junior varsity cheerleading coach Wilson High School
Allison Hines varsity cheerleading sponsor Rogers High School
Tonya Hanback junior high girls basketball coach Central High School

As recommended by Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mrs. Cornelius, seconded
by Mr. Patterson and passed to re-employ certified personnel for the 2012-2013 school year,

The motion was made by Mrs. Cornelius, seconded by Mr. Patterson and passed as
recommended by Mr. Valentine to employ personnel for the 2012-2013 school year,

Upon the recommendation of Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mr. Beavers,
seconded by Mrs. Cornelius and passed to employ personnel for the 2012-2013 school year,

The motion was made by Mr. Beavers, seconded by Mr. Holden and passed to go into
executive session.
The motion was made Mr. Beavers, seconded by Mr. Holden and passed to go back into
regular session.
As recommended by Mr. Valentine, the motion was made by Mr. Patterson, seconded by
Mrs. Cornelius and passed for the Board Attorney Dr. James Irby to negotiate a lease agreement
for the Tapp Property through January 2, 2013.
