         UNMH/Community Interpreter Advisory Committee               Newborns           Pediatrics    Adults




    1.        PURPOSE:

    The purpose of the UNM Hospitals/Community Interpreter Advisory Committee is to assist
    in monitoring and improving the interpretation and translation delivery system at all hospitals
    and clinics within the UNMHSC. The committee will review recommendations made by the
    consultant and monitor progress of the action plans established.

    2.        CROSS REFERENCES: None

    3.        DEFINITIONS:

    The UNM Hospitals Interpreter Advisory Committee was formed to monitor success of and
    provide recommendations for improvement of the interpretation and translation delivery
    system at all hospitals and clinics within the UNMHSC.

    4. GENERAL INFORMATION and DESIRED OUTCOME:

    The UNM Hospitals Interpreter Advisory Committee shall be expected to:

             Review and recommend for adoption those items mutually agreed to from the
              January 2006 consultant’s report on interpretation and translation services at the
              UNMHSC hospitals and clinics.
             Mutually agree on action plan and timetables for improvement of services
             Review progress on action plan
             Create a subcommittee to study and monitor the special interpretation and translation
              needs of Native American patients
             Provide written progress reports to Community Advocacy Committee of the UNM
              HSC Clinical Operations Board

               Provide written progress reports to the UNM HSC Office of Community Affairs
                Committee
               Provide written progress reports and may report to the UNM Board of Regents at
                least quarterly
               Meet for a period of three (3) years


    5. UNM HOSPITALS/COMMUNITY INTERPRETER ADVISORY
       COMMITTEE STRUCTURE AND MEMBERSHIP:

    The UNM Hospitals/Community Interpreter Advisory Committee co-chairs will be a member
    of the UNM Hospitals staff and a member of the community. The UNM Hospital staff co-
    chair is appointed by the UNM Hospital CEO. The community member co-chair is selected
    by the community groups represented on the committee. The co-chairs shall be appointed
    for one year and may continue to serve as co-chairs at the request of the appointing bodies.

    Other members of the committee will include a representative from New Mexico Center on
    Law and Poverty and from each plaintiff organization from the New Mexico Voices for
    Children et al vs. UNM Hospital lawsuit, additional community advocates for the LEP
    community, and other UNM Hospitals representatives as identified by the CEO. In addition,
    the Chair of the UNM Hospitals Clinical Operations Board Community Advocacy Committee
    and the UNM HSC Director of Community Affairs will be members of the committee.
