Title: Combining Like Terms Using Everyday Objects
Concept: Combining Like Terms, Evaluating Expressions

2.8.8.D Use concrete objects to model algebraic concepts.
2.5.11.B Use symbols, mathematical terminology, standard notation, mathematical
rules, graphing and other types of mathematical representations to
communicate observations, predictions, concepts, procedures,
generalizations, ideas and results.

Specific Objectives:
 Students will learn the rules of how to combine like terms.
 Students will learn the new vocabulary associated with combining like terms.
 Students will learn how to combine like terms using addition and subtraction.
 Students will practice simplifying expressions by combining like terms.

Essential Question/Content
 What are the definition of a term, constant, and coefficient?
 What are like terms?
 How can expressions be simplified using like terms?

Required Materials and Technology:
 PowerPoint: Combining like terms and shapes.
 Guided Notes
 Three different types of everyday objects. For example, paper clips, erasers, markers,
post-it notes, index cards, crayons, or dice.

 Teacher will start off the lesson with a demonstration of combining like terms using
three different groups of objects placed in bag. The teacher will lead a discussion of
what characteristics were used to group his/her objects. What is like or unlike?
Teacher will then create an equation using the objects. This will model the activity
for the students.

Step-by-Step Procedures (knowledge acquisition and practice):
 Students will complete warm-up questions on order of operations. Make sure there
are no variables in the expressions. Make sure of the students understanding of order
of operations before moving on.
 Hand out bag of objects to each student along with the guided notes for this section.
Discuss the instructions for the activity. Activity should be completed in about 5
minutes. Students should work by themselves and hand in their own expression.
Have students separate into groups the different objects.

 Teacher will circulate among the students to assure that they understand the
directions and objectives.
 Teacher will lead discussion on combining like and unlike terms.
Ask: What happens when we combine 4 paper clips with 2 paper clips?
What happens when we combine 4 paper clips with 5 erasers?
How can we represent that relationship algebraically?
 Teacher will present the new vocabulary in a PowerPoint presentation. The
PowerPoint will go over the vocabulary words; term, constant, coefficient, and like
term. The students will answer the questions on the guided notes pertaining to the
vocabulary terms. Using Smart Board teacher will go over all the examples with the
students.
 Teachers will assign students to groups of 2. Each group will work on Page 82
problems #35-42.
 Teachers will circulate among the groups to assure they are engaged and answer
questions if needed.
 The class will go over the answers on the SmartBoard.

Plan for homework:
 Students will complete teacher made worksheet #1-10. Simplifying only. Do not
solve the equations.

Closure (Assess understanding based on diagnostic assessment of the set):
 Students will complete the worksheet provided. They will write the new ideas that
are locked in their memory, and things that you still have questions about.

Differentiation instructions (Adaptations for students with learning disabilities and
extensions for students who grasp concepts quickly):
 Algebra tiles
 Calculators to at coefficients.
 Encourage the students to use shapes around each different term.

Possible Connections Careers:
 Waitress
 Retail
