Don’t Leave Students Hanging on P.E. 101
The merits of retaining P.E. 101, the personal health course required for freshmen,
has been a prominent topic of debate on campus for quite some time now. Whatever
one’s position, however, there is no question that the program’s present state of flux is
highly undesirable. Meeting all of the myriad General Education Requirements (GERs)
is a necessity for those students who hope to graduate — last we checked, everyone
— and it is imperative that the college faculty arrive at a decision before freshmen are
faced with making their own decisions concerning their spring courseload.
A preponderance of students and faculty have spoken in support of the idea of
keeping P.E. 101 as a GER, arguing for the importance of providing a uniform, foun-
dational health course for incoming students, some of whom may have only received
abstinence-only health education from their high schools. The Wheel has been among
those voices who have been supportive of the goals methods of the P.E. Department,
and the general purpose of P.E. 101, despite what may be its faults.
But now, with it unlikely that the University will hire anyone to replace Daniel
Adame, the associate professor who teaches P.E. 101, after he retires following the
spring semester, is the opportune time to reconfigure the program. There are aspects,
however, that should not change or should be further emphasized. In the past — and
now — upperclassmen have been permitted to enroll in the course if they had been
putting it off during their initial semesters at Emory. The information from P.E. 101,
though, is most useful for those students newly embarking upon their college experi-
ence, and the course would likely serve its purpose best were it to be fashioned as a
freshman-only program. catherine cai

most incoming students the course has already moved permanently online; uniformity
would obviously be a preferred outcome of any package of changes. Certain aspects
of P.E. 101 could be incorporated into the Pre-Major Advising Connections at Emory
(PACE) program for freshmen — for example, requiring students to attend appropriate
events and lectures could be folded into the current roster of PACE requirements. Or,
major aspects P.E. 101 could be implemented as a more interactive and Internet-based Let’s get this confession out of the way: I ToK” shows her doing the infamous “walk her for the overly sexualized lyrics: “Don’t be
