SURVIVAL SKILLS:

1. WEBSITE (www.ubccardiology.ca)
 All of the scheduled events are posted on the website (see both the resident schedule
        and the site-specific schedules)
 Check the website often for changes!

2. ORIENTATION MANUAL (also on the website)
 Britt will provide you with one
 This will save you lots of headaches down the line
 Look at the rotation specific goals and objectives BEFORE YOU START THE
        ROTATION

3. CALL
 In-house for the first 6 months (You are expected to go home at noon the next day)
 You have to review every patient in-person that comes in before 10 pm
 All discharges have to be discussed with staff
 DO NOT TO LEAVE PATIENTS IN ER UNTIL THE NEXT MORNING THAT ARE
TO BE DISCHARGED! Don’t be afraid to phone your staff at night.
 Call Switches are arranged between fellows on an altruistic basis - Need to inform:
         o Britt Kujala brittkujala@telus.net
o SPH - Dr. Krish Ramanathan kramanathan@providencehealth.bc.ca and
             BAWoods@providencehealth.bc.ca (office: Brittney)

             (office: Sherry)
         o Ellie Stadnick ellamae@interchange.ubc.ca
    Back up Call
o For those who have last minute emergencies/illnesses
o The purpose is to provide a last resort for those who need to find coverage.
However, it is the expectation that the resident at least attempt to find coverage
before resorting to the back up call schedule.
o It is expected that the coverage functions as a standard call trade

4. RESOURCES FOR HELP
 Look to more senior residents for help if you have questions or just need advice; talk
to someone who’s done it before
 You have lots of places to go for help – Britt, Parvathy, the chiefs…
