INTRODUCTION
1 Introduction
1.1 What is this Report About?
This report is the result of Canadean’s extensive market research covering the Home Improvement in New
Zealand. It provides detailed historic and forecast sales data of the category along with market segmentation
of Home & Garden Products.
1.2 Definitions
All research is conducted in local currency in nominal prices. US dollar conversions for all historic data and
for the latest year of actual data (2011 in this report) are made using an annual average exchange rate. As
we do not forecast exchange rates, the forecast data (from 2012 to 2016) is converted using a fixed 2011
exchange rate. As a result, annual growth rates for historic data will differ between local currencies and US
dollar conversions, whereas they will be the same for forecasts.

Jewelry, watches and Includes gold jewelry, silver jewelry and other precious jewelry like diamonds,
accessories platinum, precious stones (sapphires, emeralds and rubies), pearls (natural and
cultured) and semi-precious stones (e.g. quartz, opal, topaz, amethyst, coral etc.),
fashion jewelry (non-precious jewelry), hair accessories, belts, hats, gloves, scarves,
sunglasses and ties, plus watches.
Luggage and leather Includes suitcases, travel bags, briefcases, handbags, wallets and purses.

Home & Garden Printed media Includes paperback, hardbound books, and books sold from internet sites like
Products Amazon, but not e-books. Books sold to libraries are excluded. Retail sales of
newspapers, periodicals, and magazines are included, but subscription copies are not.
Stationery and cards Includes personal stationery products like notebooks, erasers, pencils, rulers,
sharpeners, writing boards, exam boards, graph books, pencil boxes, geometry boxes,
notebook covers, glue sticks, maps, paper clips and binders, pencil grippers,
calculators, etc. that are sold through retail channels excluding office supplies. Cards
include seasonal and every day cards.
Electrical and Communications Includes retail sales only of answer machines, fax machines, fixed-line telephones,
electronics equipment mobile phone accessories and mobile phones.
Computer hardware Includes retail sales only of desktops and laptop computers, software, memory sticks,
and software CD packs, hard disks and other data storage devices, computer peripherals, PDAs,
organizers, calculators, and satellite navigation systems.
Consumer electronics Includes CD players, DVD players/recorders, hi-fi systems, home theatres, in-car
entertainment systems, portable digital audios, radios, televisions and video recorders,
home use and portable games consoles.
Household appliances Includes major domestic appliances (air conditioners, dishwashers, dryers, freezers,
hobs and extractors, microwave ovens, refrigerators, stoves, vacuum cleaners and
washing machines) plus minor domestic appliances (blenders, coffee machines, deep
fryers, food processors, grills, hair products, hair trimmers, curling tongs, razors, hand-
held mixers, irons, juicers, kettles, stand mixers, toasters, sun lamps and fans).
