                                    HONORS COLLEGE APPLICATION

General Instructions

The form attached to this sheet serves as an application for the UTSA Honors College. If you plan to attend UTSA in the
approaching fall semester and submit the application by February 15, the Honors College application also serves as a
scholarship application. Only students who have been admitted to UTSA (through a separate UTSA application
process, which requires submission of an official high school transcript and test scores) can be considered for
scholarships and membership in the Honors College.                To be considered for Honors College scholarships,
APPLICATIONS MUST BE POSTMARKED OR RECEIVED BY E-MAIL BY FEBRUARY 15.

Applications for membership in the Honors College are accepted at any time. You can fill out this form in Word, save it, and
e-mail it as an attachment to honors@utsa.edu, or you can print it out and send it to the following address.

Honors College Information

The Honors College is for students from all majors who seek intellectual stimulation and challenge. Through Honors
sections of core courses, special Honors seminars, internships, study abroad, and special research opportunities, Honors
students obtain a rich liberal arts experience in the context of a large, metropolitan university. One of the hallmarks of the
program is personalized attention. Honors students receive special advising from Honors College staff and referrals for
scholarships, internships, and other special opportunities. More information on the Honors College is available on our

Honors College Eligibility Requirements

Entering freshmen with a minimum SAT (M+V) of 1100 or ACT of 24 or class rank in the top 10% are invited to apply for
admission to the college. Continuing UTSA students and transfer students who have completed at least 12 hours of college
course work and have attained a 3.30 GPA or higher are also invited to apply for admission. Admission is competitive and is
based on the complete application.


Honors College Scholarship Information

Twenty Presidential Honors Scholars and one Peter T. Flawn Presidential Honors Scholar are selected each year from
among the most outstanding freshman and transfer applicants to the Honors College. Presidential Honors Scholars receive
$6,000 over four years and Peter T. Flawn Presidential Honors Scholars receive $10,000 over four years (if they continue to
meet Honors scholarship requirements). To be considered for these scholarships, new transfer students must have a
transfer GPA of 3.5 or higher and new freshmen must rank in the top 20% of their high school class and have a minimum
SAT of 1150 (M+V) or ACT of 25. INCOMING STUDENTS MUST APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS BY FEBRUARY 15.
Other Honors scholarships are awarded as they become available. All active members of the Honors College in good
standing are eligible to receive other Honors scholarships and no additional application is necessary.

   Letters of Recommendation and Transcripts
        All applicants must submit at least one letter of recommendation. Applicants participating in the
        February scholarship competition are required to submit two letters of recommendation and an
        official high school or college transcript with their application to the Honors College. Letters from
        family members and family friends are not accepted. Applications without transcripts will not be
        processed for the scholarship competition.


   UTSA Application
      Applicants who have not yet been admitted to UTSA at the time of application must submit a UTSA
      application. Scholarship awards cannot be offered to Honors College applicants who have not also
      been admitted to UTSA.
Writing Sample
             If you are applying for the February competition you must write an essay.
             If your SAT score (M+V) is below 1100 or your ACT score is below 24, you must write an essay.
             If your rank is below 10%, you must write an essay.
        Applicants who are required to complete this section should enter a composition (500 words or more,
        typed, and double-spaced) on one of the topics listed below in the space provide (cut/paste is allowed):

       1. Describe a significant setback, challenge or opportunity in your life and the impact that it has had on you.

       2. Describe an example of your leadership. Be sure to describe your actions and the actions of those around
          you and to explain what you accomplished.

       3. Write an essay about one or more of your ancestors and try to imagine what it means that you and this
          ancestor are kin. Alternatively, what does it mean that you, like some of us, are with unknown ancestors or
          that you feel no meaningful connection to those ancestors whom you know.
