               Introduction

• Approximately 83,000 acres and
  50,000 acres of corn are grown for
  grain or silage in New Mexico
  annually.
• Most of the corn produced whether
  silage or grain is mainly for the diary
  and livestock industries.
      Materials and Methods

• Experiments were conducted on a Wall
  Sandy loam with less than 1% OM.
• Pioneer 34M95 and 34N44 were planted on
  May 13 and 14, 2002-2003 at
  approximately 35,000 seeds/A.
• Individual plots were 4, 34 in rows 30 ft
  long.
• Randomized complete block with three
  replications.
      Materials and Methods

• Treatments were applied on June 4
  and June 2, 2002-2003 when corn
  was in the 4th leaf stage and weeds
  were small.
• Treatments were applied with a
  compressed air backpack sprayer
  calibrated to deliver 30 gal/A at 30 psi.
      Materials and Methods

• Air temperature during application
  were approximately 79 and 91
  degrees in 2002-2003.
• 8004 Flat fan nozzles.
• Herbicide treatments were applied
  with a crop oil concentrate and N-32
  at 0.5 and 1.0 percent v/v.
      Materials and Methods

• Crop injury and weed control
  evaluations were made on July 8 and
  17, in 2002-2003.
• Field corn was harvested on
  December 10 and 4, 2002-2003 by
  combining the two center rows of each
  plot using a John Deere 3300
  combine equipped with a load cell.

           Results

• None of the herbicides caused any
  noticeable crop injury.
• Redroot and prostrate pigweed and
  common lambsquarters control were
  good to excellent with all treatments
  except the check.
• Steadfast, DPX 79406 and Option
  applied alone gave poor control of
  Russian thistle.
      Weed Control Results

• Option gave 53 and 85 percent better
  control of black nightshade than did
  Steadfast or DPX 79406.
• Black nightshade and Russian thistle
  control increased significantly when
  Steadfast, DPX 79406, and Option
  were combined with either clarity,
  marksman, distinct, and callisto.
     Corn Grain Yield Results

• Yields were 109 to 152 and 86 to 150
  bu/A higher in the herbicide treated
  plots as compared to the check.
• Steadfast plus callisto and Option plus
  callisto were the highest yielding
  herbicide treatments of 262 and 293
  bu/A.

  Option were combined with clarity,
  marksman, distinct, or callisto, black
  nightshade and Russian thistle control
  significantly increased in 2002-2003.
• Yield were significantly better in the
  herbicide treated plots as compared to
  the weedy check in 2002-2003.
