THE FAMILY of HENRY MILES McMAHAN
1.2.2.2 HENRY MILES McMAHAN, the second of William and Adeline
Lucretia (Gaines) McMahan's eleven children, was born 20 October
1854 at Old Hopewell, Cleburne County, AL. He grew up on his
parents farm at Old Hopewell. (Picture 12.)
On 28 October 1875 in Cleburne County, Henry married Mary
Catherine Wiggonton. (Picture 13.) "Katie", the oldest daughter
of John William and Mary Ann (Pounds) Wiggonton, was born 17
January 1856 in Cleburne County. Her father was a Major and
commanding officer of the 48th Alabama Infantry during the Civil
War. Before the Civil War he was a Justice of the Peace. In
1873 he was the postmaster of Kemps Creek, Cleburne County and
served one term as sheriff of Cleburne County. Katie's sister,
Emma Elizabeth, was the first wife of Newton Jasper McMahan,
Henry's brother!

Henry was a farmer. He owned and operated a two hundred acre
farm, near Abernathy, Cleburne County on which he raised cotton
and corn and the foodstuffs needed to raise a family. He never
joined a church but always lived according to Christian values.
He was a fine disciplinarian; his children were well-mannered and
behaved. Katie was a member of the Lebanon Methodist Church,
Lebanon, Cleburne County. When problems arose, she took strength
from her religion.

On 31 October 1896 at Abernathy, with his wife, children, father
and eight brothers standing around his bed, Henry died of
typhoid. He is buried in the Lebanon Church Cemetery. Katie and
her children continued to live in the family home, managed and
worked the farm. She also boarded teachers from the Abernathy
School to supplement her income. She was a friendly, likeable
lady, who always cooked more food than the family needed, just in
case someone stopped by at mealtime. She liked to tell tales
about the old days.

Katie died 26 June 1945 at Heflin, AL from old age and is buried
alongside Henry.

1.2.2.2.5 BUELAH MAE McMAHAN, the last of Henry Miles and Mary
Catherine (Wiggonton) McMahan's five children, was born 21 June
1890 in Abernathy, Cleburne County, AL. Buelah's family moved
into a new home shortly before his death. The house was never
finished. Her mother reared the four children, farmed the land
and kept the family together. Buelah completed the equivalent of
a high school education at the ungraded school at Abernathy. She
was athletic and liked to play ball. (Picture 19.)
On 26 December 1909 in Abernathy, Buelah married Ether Thrasher.
He was born 17 December 1887 in Abernathy to John and Savanna
(Harris) Thrasher. Ether completed school at Abernathy. A year
or so after their marriage, they moved to Tallapoosa, GA where
Ether worked on the railroad as a section foreman. About 1914
he and his family moved to Gadsden, AL where he was employed by
Gadsden Car Works as a foreman of a crew building railroad cars;
his crew built the first refrigerator car! The car works burned
about 1923 or 1924 after which the family moved to a farm near
Plainview, Cleburne County. Ether was a farmer and sawmiller.
Both Buelah and Ether were active in New Hope Methodist Church,
Cleburne County. Buelah acted as the first superintendent of the
Sunday School when it was organized. She was a homemaker; a good
wife, mother and neighbor. Together, Buelah and Ether made their
house a happy home; young people enjoyed visiting them - they
never knew how many to prepare food for. The preachers made
Buelah and Ether's home their headquarters.
Ether died 29 November 1938 in Plainview from kidney failure and
is buried in the Antioch Church Cemetery, Cleburne County.
Buelah was diabetic. She died 15 November 1967 in Birmingham, AL
