Dear Parents/Guardians of Students currently enrolled in Junior Kindergarten
At Glen Echo, we are fortunate to be a dual-track school, meaning that we offer programs in both of Canada’s official
languages. Beginning in Senior Kindergarten, instruction is offered in both English and French.
The decision as to which program is best for your child is never an easy one. Experiences of older siblings, skill
development in Junior Kindergarten and parental preference are all items to consider. Your child’s Junior Kindergarten
teacher is an excellent resource to help guide your choice of English or French Immersion for your child in Senior
In both Senior Kindergarten and Grade 1, the French Immersion program is fully French. The only exception (for
safety reasons) is Physical Education (taught in English). Beginning in Grade 2, French Immersion students receive
200 minutes per week of English language instruction. Students in English classes begin instruction in Core French in
Grade 4. If you are considering French Immersion for your child in Senior Kindergarten, please visit our website at
http://www.hwdsb.on.ca/programs/fi for dates and locations for the French Immersion Parent Information Meetings.
Please complete the cut off portion below of this letter and return it to your child’s Junior Kindergarten teacher by

however we generally have more requests than we can accommodate for the morning program.
It is important for parents to understand that our school can’t exceed the number of classes we’ve been allocated for
French Immersion senior kindergarten. That allocation is based on the number of French Immersion senior
kindergarten classes in place this year. Students already in junior kindergarten at Glen Echo will have priority. If we
see a greater number of students enrolling in French Immersion senior kindergarten than available spaces, we will
establish a waiting list. Registrations will be date and time stamped as the wait list will operate on a first-come, first-
Students will attend junior kindergarten in their English boundary home school and enter Glen Echo for French
Immersion in senior kindergarten. Parents are invited to apply through the Out-of-Catchment process if they would like
their child to attend junior kindergarten at Glen Echo. We will let parents know after June 15 if space is available in the
school. Spaces will be allocated to siblings first based on a lottery. If space permits beyond siblings, spaces will also
be allocated by lottery. The remaining spots will be filled in September.
We appreciate your patience as we transition to our full-day kindergarten program. We are deeply committed to
providing a high quality French Immersion program. Moving our entry point doesn’t change that commitment.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give me a call.
