Basic Function: Summarize the position and how it relates to the school district and its goals.
Essential Functions:
Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. They are essential for one or more of the following
reasons:
A. The number of employees available to perform the function is limited.
B. The function requires specialized skills.
C. The function occupies a large percentage of time.
D. Failure to perform the function may have serious consequences.
Examples from Iowa School Districts include:
1. Assist with quality and quantity control.
2. Assist with staff training in the cook’s area.
3. Assist with cleaning at the end of the day.
4. Assist in setting up serving line, replenishing and serving or working on the line.
5. Read menu and plan work to accomplish food preparation for the week.
6. Read communications from Central Administration, Food and Nutrition Management, and building
offices.
7. Prepare main dish, sandwiches, vegetables, soups, etc., using appropriate methods and standardized
recipes.
8. Work with manager on production problems and determining solutions.
9. Adjust recipes to produce desired quantity.
10. Perform other duties as assigned by Food Service Manager.
11. In absence of manager, open and close kitchen.
