Turf Talk with Gary Weller
As the colder weather approaches, our focus has now turned toward the challenges
of “winter play”. When we have a frost delay, play usually begins around 10:00
am. Sometimes, it could be as late as noon. When the morning temperatures are
below freezing, the greens are usually frozen. This makes it impossible to prepare
the course for play. With the greens frozen, we can’t mow or roll the greens. We
can’t change the holes, because we can’t get the cup cutter in the ground. We can’t
fix ball marks or rake bunkers, because the moisture in the sand is frozen.
Sometimes it may be several days before these tasks can be performed. During the
winter months, you may see us performing these tasks later in the day after the
ground has been allowed to thaw. During the week, it’s not too bad, but the big
challenge is on the weekend when we want to open the course as soon as possible.
So, please be patient. It is best to contact the pro shop before you come out to play.
