100th anniversary of the Büssing works

Overwhelming response at the "European Büssing
meeting"

At the weekend of September 20th and 21st 2003 12,000 truck
and bus aficionados flocked to the "European Büssing
meeting" at the MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG parking lot in
Salzgitter.

The club "Heinrich Büssing Verkehrsgeschichte e.V.", which
dedicates itself to preserving the history of the legendary
commercial-vehicle builder, Heinrich Büssing, and to keeping alive
the tradition, played host to this historic event.

The event was held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the
foundation of the company. On 17th April 1903 Heinrich Büssing had
his business application for the "manufacture of internal combustion
engines and motor vehicles" entered at the registration office at the
Ducal Residence in Braunschweig. Already on October 22 nd 1903
the first Büssing truck was in operation on the streets. After seven
decades of innovative commercial-vehicle development MAN
Nutzfahrzeuge took over Büssing AG. The Braunschweig castle lion
in the MAN logo still pays memory to Heinrich Büssing, who would
have been 160 this year.

In splendid weather 12,000 visitors used the opportunity to admire
150 veteran Büssing vehicles, trucks and buses from the early days
of commercial-vehicle manufacture right up to the last few years of
production at Büssing. The veterans came from all over Europe to
jointly celebrate this anniversary. The visitors could see with their
own eyes idealism coupled with craftsmanship and an immense

array of inventiveness employed in the restoration of these old
vehicles. Drivers proudly started up their engines, and some of them
even went for short rounds. There were attractions for young and
old: In the playmobile, at the market for toy vehicles and in the
bookshop fans were having a good time. At the stand of the MAN
training centre MAN trainees had set up an original Büssing forge
from the years 1903 and 1953 and a modern training workshop from
the year 2003. The event was rounded off by a presentation of
vehicles from MAN's current truck and bus production.
