The Skeens Family
Our Short History…
Kyla was Born with 3 congenital heart defects PDA (Patent Ductus Arterious ) ADS (Atrial
Septal Defect) and a narrowing of her aortic arch (Coarctation). Along with the heart
problems she had a few common challenges that are typical of a baby with Downs
Syndrome. Because her heart was working so hard it was described that it was like Kyla was
constantly running a marathon. She was burning more calories then she could consume.
This was bad for a few reasons, mostly because her body needs these nutrients to heal her
heart, we put Kyla on a strict schedule of feeding her around the clock (literal 24 hours
a day). because of her poor endurance ( due to her heart defects) and poor muscle tone
(due to the Downs Syndrome) it would take Kyla 45–60 min to eat 4 oz of milk, and she
had to be fed every two hours. Because of Kyla’s feeding issue and the fact that she was
burning more calories than she could eat, we would have to give her double the amount
of formula with pumped breast milk. For example what Kyla would eat in a 4 oz bottle
(calorie based) was equal to what would be in three 4 oz bottles.
We also had to keep Kyla from getting ill, it was told to us that if she would get sick
that she wouldn’t eat and would start losing weight (even a cold that could make her
congested and make it hard for her to breathe while she would eat) that kept us from
ever going/taking her any where. We didn’t let Kyndall have friends over or let family
visit. Kyla was 8 LBS when she was born and only gained 7 LBS when she had her heart
surgery (the exact amount they said she would need to gain). Since her surgery (4
months) she has already gained another 7 LBS, she can now eat 8 oz of milk in 20 min
without rest breaks and still has never been sick a day of her life (she is 18 months).
Visit MiracleRide.net to read Kyla’s entire story.
The Bailey Family
Taylor’s journey with biliary atresia
As many of you know, my daughter was born with a disease known as biliary atresia. This is a
disease where the bile ducts are very tiny or absent. Therefore, the flow of bile from the liver to
the intestines is obstructed. This can eventually cause liver failure.
We first discovered that there may be a problem when we went for the first ultrasound. They saw a
‘spot’ in the baby’s abdomen that they could not identify. It was diagnosed as a choledoccal cyst (a
cyst on the gall bladder). This can also constrict the flow of bile so we were advised to have the cyst
removed once the baby was born. We were told that this would fix her problem.
Taylor went into surgery at Riley Children’s Hospital when she was 10 days old. The surgeon who
had been very confident that this would be a routine surgery was sorry to tell us that while they
were in there removing the cyst, they did not see proper bile ducts (or a biliary tree) and therefore
had biliary atresia. He explained to us that they had done everything that could be done, but that
there is no cure for biliary atresia. He further explained that most children with this disease (80%)
will need a liver transplant by the age of 2. The only thing that the doctors were able to do was
to perform the kasai procedure, where they make a makeshift bile duct by connecting part of her
intestine to her liver to restore bile flow. They also removed the gall bladder and the cyst. Obviously
we were devastated. We spent 11 days at Riley before we could take her home.
The major concern during the first 5 years after having this procedure done is an infection known as
cholangitis, where the naturally occurring bacteria that live in the intestines move up the makeshift
bile duct and infect her liver. The infection could potentially severely damage her liver and cause liver
failure. The major symptom of this infection is fever. Therefore, we’ve been instructed that any time
she has a fever within these first 5 years that we take her to Riley immediately to be admitted and put
on IV antibiotics…
Visit MiracleRide.net to read Taylor’s entire story.

Jim Allison and his partners founded the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1909. They wanted nothing more than to establish a venue where people could witness

By the same token, who would have imagined then that the racing team Jim established to compete
