How To Set And Attain Realistic And Effective (Wise ) Goals (Part Two) How to Set and Achieve practical and Effective (SMART) ambitions - Part Two How to line the Right Goals to Achieve what you really Want out of Life? by Craig Lock Well now is a great time of year to start setting ambitions for the coming year and put these people into practice (forgotten your new years ones already?) and consequently CREATE YOUR OWN FUTURE. What is really important to you right this moment in your life? In other words, exactly what do you really value? The main headings are: PEOPLE- THINGS- other , e.g. career. Furthermore finances. That word funds again! Areas of ambitions : These can be divided into brief , medium and long-term; these respectively being six months, one/two many five plus years. Furthermore divide them into balanced components , being: personal, family, social and work goals. Then break them down additional into: * Spiritual * Mental * Physical * Financial * Family * Community/School Remember that over-concentration on one involving your goals will not ensure accomplishment. A car can only run well if every one of the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure... and whether it has four wheels! The art of goalsetting should be to balance all of these areas. If one area is out of proportion in your wheel of life, it affects everything else. Your tyre of life should be circular evenly and balanced, in order that it gives a smooth ride. In contrast to mine. Currently my self confidence is pathetic; so I am subscribing to "rent-a-friend", as I'm way too enthusiastic about my work, my creating and spend far too much time focussed on it... Instead of having more fun ! A thought... Perhaps isn't it about time I slowed down in my article submissions and set a goal of using that point for pure relaxation! bed not the culprit that for a goal? TIPS ON HOW TO ACHIEVE GOALS 1. Have permission to dream as well as desire. Put aside (asmuch that you can ) all reason and reasoning. If you don't have a goal , you have nothing to aim for and no plan of action. Without a goalyou are only kicking a ball around. Think creatively by using your imagination in establishing targets. 2. Make a grasp dream list. It is important to write down everything you want and need. Every place you want to go and everything you want to become or achieve. These needn't be high ideals, but genuine wants , eg. Putting food up for grabs (most important for "starving" writers - hint hint, declare no more, say no more!), a brand new car, beach house, swimming pool, yacht. A "suitable job" for writers like me, maybe ! 3. Aim high: extend yourself to your limit as well as you will achieve more than you believed possible. The higher the level of conscious goals, the greater their encouraging power. 4. Prioritise the Goals. Start off with some easy goals to get you in the 'habit of achieving'. Know where you are now and how you got presently there. (" How the s... did i purchase where I am now?). Look at yourself and learn from people. These goals must be compatible with your inner values. Valuations are what we hold to be important at the deepest level of our being. Doing this can make them far more likely to be accomplished. 5. Set a time reduce for achieving them. It is important to set a deadline day...but it doesn't have to be "emerge concrete". Don't let something continue for three years that could have been achieved in one year. Set short-term goals: tomorrow, a few weeks , next month. Also set prolonged range goals which will require vision, courage and foresight. Ultimately , set your ultimate goals like , becoming an All Black or even Springbok (these are rugby basketball players from New Zealand and South Africa for "uninformed Americans"- oops, er , sorry!), a Judge, or even some grand purpose, and many others.... As long as that is what you actually desire. List the steps needed or smaller goals required to be achieved on the path to your main goal. By breaking them down they'll seem more attainable as soon as each minor goal is achieved will bring you closer to the ultimate goal. List the skills, qualifications or even traits you will need to achieve these people. 6. Be inspired: acquire regular inspiration and enthusiasm via reading and other motivational material (this way book- PLUG, PLUG). Furthermore helpful is frequent contact with someone or people who inspire and enthuse you. 7. Focus on your goal like a laser and pursue it every day Don't be frustrated - sometimes "one step backwards comes before a leap forward ". "Dare to be different to people ", if that is just being "the true " YOU. Don't allow the future to do something on you. Act on the future. Don't see yourself as a weak victim of circumstances, but rather together having many choices to take any path you CHOOSE to move your life forward. N.B. Ambitions should be written down and regularly examined. This makes for focussing ones thoughts and COMMITMENT in seeing them through. Write each and every goal on a list so when you achieve it, tick it off and enter a new goal. Act immediately on your short-term goals, as only actions will get you there. Have equilibrium in your dreams and be truthful and realistic with yourself. A goal will be either meaningful in itself or even as a means to an end. More Goal Tips * Start first with your longer term goals as well as break them down; if you start with short term goals you will end up with more of the same. * focus first on the overall final result , not how you will achieve the goal or you will limit yourself.then a amazing power of your inventiveness (in the form of your subconscious thoughts ) will come up with the plan on the way to achieve your goals. The result may come to you immediately or even take a while... And then come to you within unexpected moments, like in your shower. Usually at times when you're most relaxed. * do not be obsessive about goals - don't fret, but let them happen, don't force these people. Successful people make things happen and employ the process of Goal Setting. Ask yourself whether you are a goal-setter or goal-getter? You are not since stuck down in a rut as you may think. You have a lot more choices than you could ever think about. GOALS - THE FIVE important QUESTIONS "The important thing is to identify what you need to do after which it DO IT!" * Which? What do you really want? Break down straight into needs and wants, e.g.. Yacht, pool, new automobile , beach house, holiday. Furthermore set tangible and intangible goals. * Why? If it is not planned, it doesn't occur. * When? Goals must have a time frame. Long array goals should have checkpoints and a completion date. Who? ambitions involve others : # enterprise (the boss, manager) # Personal (wife/husband/partner) * precisely how ? What is the blueprint? you simply can't build without plans. The reason why you must have specific ambitions. Don't Forget: A. Involve people. B. State goals in terms of measurable results. C. Set target dates. D. Always be specific. Criteria for establishing EFFECTIVE Goals They: # must make you enthusiastic and excite you. # Must be truly your own goals - meaningful to YOU only. # Must be depending on real desires. # should be consistent with your values and always be purposeful. # Must be down on paper. # Must lift each of our sights, yet be realistic and attainable. # Must be specific as well as measurable. # Must be works with your other goals. # Must have a starting as well as completion date. # retain written goals in front of anyone. # Should be dynamic, although not set in concrete. * GOAL DESIGN 1. ITEMISE - list probable goals - don't analyse with this stage 2. CATEGORISE - personal/family/work (use headings from the Wheel involving Life). 3. PRIORITISE - relate with what you value and list. 4. CRYSTALLISE - make particular and clear, use the kiss principle ("keep it simple, silly "). Oops, sorry my dear reader! Remember that ambitions are dreams which come genuine. Most people give up on their own dreams too soon or, like me in the past, don't aim high enough and achieve them too easily and quickly. Except in writing! N.B: The substance of goal setting is: COMMITMENT DISCIPLINE DETERMINATION I really believe that. This entire organizing process might take a few days. GOALS 1. If it's not in writing, it's not at all a goal. It is a New Year quality. 2. If it's not particular , it's not a goal. 3. 'Goals must be believable, inspirational and expandable'. 4. An effective goal can be an exciting challenge. 5. Ambitions must be adjusted to new information. 6. Dynamic ambitions guide our choices. 7. Don't set short-term ambitions for longer than ninety days. 8. Maintain a balance between long-term and short-term goals. 9. Include your spouse and children in your goals. 10. Set goals in all areas of your health. 11. Your goals must harmonise with your life. 12. Review your goals regularly. 13. Set vivid goals. 14. Don't chisel your ambitions in granite/set in concrete. 15. Reach out into the future. 16. Have a set of goals for each and every day, and review final results every night. 17. Train you to ultimately crave your goals. 18. Set activity goals, not really production goals (salespeople). 19. Understand luck, and make the idea work for you. 20. Start now ! If you don't break the yearly objectives down into first quarterly and then monthly/weekly/daily activity targets, you cannot keep on track. No wonder I repeat the idea so often (the first symptoms of impending senility, perhaps???). Mark Spitz, the American swimmer, won nothing at the south america Olympics in 1968. Bitterly disappointed, he dreamt of earning 7 goal medals at the next Olympics in Munich within 1972 and set a targeted of the times he would obtain in each event. They won those seven medals together with times within 100th of your second of what he had stated he would do. He produced his plan and a rigorous training regime. His goal became an obsession which overcame the rest...yet Mark Spitz became the legend and achieved achievement. Thomas Edison tried 2000 times to invent the light bulb. He didn't view it as 2000 failures, nevertheless rather as a process to be experienced. He didn't take it personally, but saw his initiatives as 2000 ways that did not work. Every time an idea didn't work, it got Edison a step closer to his ultimate goal - SUCCESS. Which is what kept him proceeding. In a word, PERSISTENCE. Even countries have set ambitions. After being defeated in world war ii , Germany was totally devastated. However, Germany is now one of many economic giants of Europe. One more defeated nation, Japan, which only had 0.three or more of the world's land as well as 3 of the population now has 10 of the global industry. The nation's leaders set goals for these countries after the war, which seemed impossible at the time, but have been achieved. The motto: your investment mistakes of the past and press to the greater achievements of the future. There is certainly not more exciting and inspiring than new goals. Our perspective to ourselves determines our ability to set and achieve ambitions. Whatever your self-image, you project it to other people and it becomes a self-fulfilling prediction. With a positive attitude ( the topic of the following chapter) and a excellent self image, our passion for challenges will be heightened, as well as life in general. Your goals were not obvious and specific. 3. Your ambitions were not written in the present tight. E.g.. 'I have recently cleared all my short term debts and I have saved X$ (or even pounds')...'I now weigh my ideal body weight of...i Well done "Jumbo"! 4. Anyone weren't really committed to the goals and/or they were not appropriate for you. A final few words of wisdom (regardless of whether I say so myself) to end off this chapter...
