PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE FLEMISH MINISTER OF CULTURE

Mr Aviel Cahn will be Flanders Opera's new General Manager as from 1 January 2009. He will
succeed Mr. Marc Clémeur who has accepted the post of Director-General of the Opéra National du
Rhin in Strasbourg as from 2009. Flemish minister of Culture Bert Anciaux announced this last
Friday.

Aviel Cahn, born in Zurich in 1974, studied piano, vocals and law. He graduated as a lawyer with a
PhD about the legal position of a theatre’s general manager. He is currently managing director of
the Zürcher Kammerorchester. In 2000 he spent a year as business and artistic director international
relations at the China National Symphony Orchestra in Beijing. From 2001 to 2004 he was head of
planning and casting at the National Opera of Finland and afterwards he was opera director of the
Stadttheater Bern. He built up an in-depth and extensive knowledge of opera companies and is seen
as a young opera producer who is very good at casting singers, and whose excellent knowledge of
production teams allows him to achieve great results with limited budgets.

The new general manager was selected by a commission chaired by Mr Paul Cools, president of the
Board of Directors of Flanders Opera. The selection commission also included a number of other
members of the Board of Directors of Flanders Opera as well as external international experts. After
selecting the submitted candidacies based on their curriculum vitae and the policy document, five
candidates were invited for an interview with the selection commission. The candidates came both
from Flanders and abroad and all have relevant experience within the opera and music theatre
world. The candidates' experience was discussed at the interview, their vision on Flanders Opera
and their position in Flanders and abroad, as well as the challenges facing the institute in the
future.

The Board of Directors of Flanders Opera is convinced to have found a worthy successor for Mr. Marc
Clémeur in Mr. Aviel Cahn.
