Professional Development Plan
The Professional Development Plan (PDP) is a self-evaluation that guides the new graduate
after the conclusion of the degree program. It is structured around the MO-STEP standards for
school library media specialists and the practical performance requirements found or
anticipated in a PK-12 school.
This PDP includes a three-to-five page personal narrative covering the areas where the
candidate
sees a need for growth
recognizes an area where continual development is needed
recognizes strengths that might lead to a specialization and leadership in the field
It also includes a note describing the candidate’s plans for future professional development
related to each of the 13 MoSTEP/AASL standards, listed in the appendix of this document.1
Instructions: Write a 3-5 page narrative in which you reflect on your personal areas for growth,
continual development, and of strength, using the MoSTEP standards as your outline. Design
your professional development plan using the worksheet, taking into account these areas
identified in your narrative, planning professional development activities aligned with each
standard, especially areas for growth and specialization. Identify at least one professional
development activity related to each standard. Complete and submit the worksheet below and
your narrative to your advisor at the end of your program. For most candidates this is at the
time they submit their paperwork for graduation.

These standards are reproduced from the MoSTEP Standards, available from the Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education, http://dese.mo.gov/divteachqual/teached/Examiners_Handbook/Appendix_1.pdf. A
paraphrase of those standards is at http://faculty.ucmo.edu/libraryscience/Syllabi/MoStepStandards.htm. You will
also find here a link to the complete set of standards arranged in a rubric and including examples of how they may
have been linked to assignments in course work and in practice in school libraries.
