Identifying carbon reduction opportunities

2008
Template (delete this slide)

 This presentation could be used to facilitate a meeting
or a workshop to look at carbon saving opportunities
  within your city
 Use together with the city-wide carbon reduction
  management toolkit
 Customise the presentation to fit your city, e.g.:
   – Include your city name, stakeholder logos, introductions
     to key staff as required;
   – Include your initial decisions on scope of work and key
figures regarding emissions baseline and energy costs
Objectives

 To identify carbon reduction opportunities within the city

 To initiate the process of comprehensive city-wide
carbon reduction strategy
Overview of the process

1. Get Started 2. Determine 3. Evaluate 4. Define 5. Implement
Current Position Options Strategy and and Review
                    and Vision for Implementation
                    the Future Plan

                                       We are
                                        here
What have we done so far?

 Compiled baseline emissions profile

 Compiled emissions forecasts

 Calculated the Value at Stake

 Agreed vision, objectives and a strategy

 Developed the Case for Action
Emissions Baseline and Forecasts

 Insert charts that show your emissions now, where they come from
  (the sources) and your forecasts
 Insert figures on current and projected energy costs

                         LA emissions - all sources (31,500 tCO2)

Vision, Goals and Strategy

 Briefly state the city’s approach to city-wide carbon
  reduction :
   – Vision
   – Objectives and targets
   – Strategy
   – Case for Action:
             – Current and future energy costs

opportunities
Scope of this programme

 Scope limited to avoid overlap with other schemes
  & programmes
 Scope includes:
   – All emissions due to transport, oil, gas, electricity use
directly under the control of the team
 Scope excludes:
 Generic building energy consumption

(Naturally ventilated open plan)

                  By cost By CO2

Carbon reduction opportunities:
1. Identify Previous Work

2-stage workshop
 1. Area Specialists Presentations
    – Specialists (e.g. from waste, transport, buildings, etc) give
      presentations covering:
         • Initiatives already in place
         • Planned Initiatives
         • Other Ideas for Projects

How to get the most out of the workshop
 Give strict timescales for each presentation
 Clarification questions may be accepted, but challenges and extended
discussions about options could be left to the brainstorming session
 Consider having the presentation information printed out so the
information is available for the brainstorming session.
Carbon reduction opportunities:
2. Brainstorm

2. Brainstorm carbon emissions reduction ideas
    – In 2-3 groups, brainstorm and write down as many ideas as
occur to you. Try to cover…
         • Buildings, transport and waste
         • Organisation practices – day-to-day management – sharp end
         • Long and short term, ambitious or simple

How to get the most out of the workshop
 Participation – feel free to speak up
 Ideas - build on others’ ideas
 Sharing experiences
 Reserving judgement
Next steps

 Finalise baseline/targets
 Development of opportunities
   – First pass prioritisation (e.g. ease and effect analysis)
   – Cost/identify funding for opportunities identified
   – Prioritise opportunities
