POSITION: Hydro Operations Technologist
DEPARTMENT: Operations
LOCATION: 10 Lisgar Ave

REPORTS TO: Manager of Engineering

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
This position is required to provide technical and organizational assistance to the Manager of
Engineering, for the analysis, design, drafting, and field duties associated with the Electrical
Distribution System, Traffic Control System, and Street Lighting Services for the Town of
Tillsonburg and Tillsonburg Hydro Inc.
EDUCATION:
3 year College Diploma in Electrical or Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum one to three years experience working within the Electrical Utility Industry in
order to gain thorough knowledge of distribution system code.
Class G driver’s license.
Certified Engineering Technologist/Technician with Membership in O.A.C.E.T.T. or
equivalent.
Ability to prioritize and deal with deadlines.
Thorough knowledge of MOE design guidelines, MEA Design manual, TAC manual
and OPSS (Ontario provincial standard specifications) and drawings.
Ability to multi task.
Ability to enter data accurately and review calculations to correct errors.
Ability to conduct required research.
Thorough understanding of the O.H.S.A., E&USA rulebook and other government
regulations that apply to distribution system safety.
Proficiency in civil design engineering software, AutoCAD civil 3D, eagle point eng
software, excel, MS Office.
Ability to lift up to 50lbs
Excellent communication skills for contact with the public and contractors.
Possess excellent technical and written skills.
Good leadership skills.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform field survey work to determine proper pole and guy line locations, trench lines,
underground ductwork, and grade levels.
Design and prepare drawings and diagrams related to the electrical distribution
(27.6kV, 4.16kV), street lighting, and traffic control systems, including overhead and
underground facilities.
Act as key corporate contact and lead the development of internal policy and
procedures related to renewable energy projects vis-a-vis FIT and microFIT programs
and other OPA programs.
Connect with and build relationships with colleagues in other LDC to ensure that the
development of new internal policy adheres to industry best practices.
Assist the Engineering Manager, Utility/Operations Manager and the Hydro
Foreperson in the short and long term planning of the distribution system.
Recommend system improvements, including new electrical materials and equipment.
Liaise with utility inspectors and auditors to ensure compliance with provincial
regulations.
Analyze loading and protection criteria of both existing and proposed distribution
infrastructure.
Record and maintain records for transformer station and feeder loading.
Prepare and administer tenders related to the electrical distribution, street lighting, and
traffic control systems.
Meet with industry representatives to investigate new products and keep aware of
trends and opportunities in the electrical distribution business.
Support the efforts and success of other engineering team members: Assist with
surveying, measurement, and inspection duties; Assist asset management technician
with data collection, analysis, data management, asset identification and classification.

Review and comment on engineering drawings from other utilities and consulting
engineers.
Prepare construction designs for both capital and new development projects, including
technical design, material lists, estimate cost.
Inspect work being carried out under contract to verify that the work conforms to the
drawings and specifications.
Maintain records, plans, and standards, to ensure effective project design and
completion.
Identify, analyze, and recommend potential sources of project funding.
Coordinate and supervise the efforts of summer students and co-op students.
Aware of safe work practices relating to job responsibilities and have a basic
understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act as it relates to the work
environment.
Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Represents Supervisor at meetings with consultants, contractors, developers, utilities
and the public.
Adheres to all policies and procedures for the Town.
