28   Module aims
                                To develop an understanding of the need for organisations to compile, analyse
                                and interpret relevant numerical information, with specific reference to
                                accounting, finance and business scenarios.

29   Learning outcomes
                                Upon successful completion of this module students should be able to:

                                Apply appropriate techniques of analysis to recognisable business and
                                accounting problems requiring a quantitative solution. In particular:

                                        Analyse business opportunities using decision trees and pay-off tables
                                        Use Network Analysis and Gantt Chart Analysis to evaluate project
                                         durations and to analyse and manage resource requirements.
                                        Formulate linear programming problems and solve graphically and by
                                         using spreadsheet software
                                        Solve problems involving the Normal Distribution
                                        Analyse survey results by use of the Chi-square test
                                        Apply sampling theory to the estimation of population parameters from a
                                         single sample with accounting applications (e.g. in auditing).

                                        Elementary probability and distribution theory; the Normal Distribution.
                                        Risk, Uncertainty and compromise in decision making: Decision Tables;
                                         Trees and related decision criteria.
                                        Decisions involving resource allocation: Linear Programming as an
                                         optimisation technique; profit and costing considerations
                                        Network analysis of Projects applying the Critical Path Method; Gantt
                                         Chart analysis and the allocation of resources.
                                        Sampling theory and applications e.g. in auditing, for large samples
                                        Survey analysis : Chi-square tests applied to Contingency tables

32   Teaching and
                                This module will consist of a series of extended seminars, with some directed
     Learning Strategies
                                independent learning supported by a detailed module workbook, which will
                                include week by week worked examples and underlying theory. The seminars
                                will introduce the various methods and techniques, indicating a number of
                                applied problem areas, examples of which will require the students to
                                formulate and solve each week prior to discussion in the following seminar
                                period. Computer labs will be used on one occasion to introduce relevant
                                problem solving software.
