ROLE Technical writer / Subject Matter Expert (SME )

A 35+-person technology and innovation team in Cork contributes to the value and expansion of
TVTextbook through continuous improvement of TVTextbook's proprietary technology. Expansion
currently underway includes software enhancements that allow TVTextbook curriculum to be
delivered via any type of media, ranging from a basic home television to state-of-the-art wireless
computer systems. Additional strategic contributions include adaptation of best-of-breed curriculum
demanded by school districts, schools and educators.
TVTextbook has offices in Cork, Ireland and Washington, D.C., and was founded by Pat McDonagh, a
world leader in creating digital education solutions (RiverDeep, SkillSoft, Thirdforce), and led by
Caleb Schutz, an education innovator recognized for some of the most visible digital learning
programs in the United States (MarcoPolo/Thinkfinity.com, Nat’l Geographic/Jason Project).
The technologies used in building our products include Flash, Adobe AIR, Java, C++, HTML5 and much more. In
addition to TV, our content partnerships are expanding and our platform is being engineered to operate across a
range of devices including PCs, Tablets, Smartphones and Smart TV devices. TVTextbook develops both client and
TVTextbook is looking for a highly motivated technical writer with an excellent command of written English, an
ability to navigate and to learn how to use new applications and an aptitude to communicate with a diverse set of
technical and managerial staff.
5 years+ experience as a Technical Writer within an IT Software Company
Qualification in an appropriate discipline (e.g. IT, Engineering, Information Systems)
Understanding of the Software Development Life cycle.
Experience with developer documentation (Programming Guides, javadocs, Web Services APIs,etc)
Expertise in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point, Project, Open Office, Libre Office
Expertise in the use of Dreamweaver, FrameMaker, Adobe and Acrobat
Have an in depth knowledge of interfacing and transferring documents from a word processor to PDF
An ability to learn, investigate and explore new applications in order to document their behaviour in user
Knowledge of tools such as Confluence, Twiki
Basic web page editing
Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Ensure accuracy and consistency of the technical/customer documentation.
Perform technical writing, research, and related editing functions to prepare documents, functional
requirements, design plans, test plans, user cases, project manuals, user manuals, business proposals,
reports, briefings, presentations, guidelines, release notes and other written materials.
Reference documents for hardware and software products, code, user interface tests, white papers,
Application Program Interface and Command Line Interface Documentation, online help systems
Ensures all deliverables are technically accurate
Collaborates with department team members, development, quality, management, design,
marketing, services, legal, and others to develop content for standard documentation sets, software
and special initiatives in-line with the development cycle.
Discuss new features with technical staff, navigate the applications and then document required
Creates and manages document schedules, content management, and information architecture
Keeping documentation up to date for every release and amending records to account for new
features during the development lifecycle
Collating technical and functional information which can then be used in such documents
Translating technical concepts into easily understood text or operating procedures
To maintain and supervise the internal documentation and wiki pages
