     To learn to accept that life hasn’t worked as I had
      hoped. I can’t change it, but I don’t have to live in
      the past
      Not being around drugs and alcohol or people who
      are using drugs (even in any support groups)
     Not being disregarded; not being “blown off”

     To not feel anxious and stressed; I have to have
      people around me to talk to

     Traveling…freedom to go when I want. Trips to Las
      Vegas and Reno with my dad
     I’ve got to have my cigarettes and soda pop

     To remember that things are better than they

What Others Need to Know            If I am going to have the things that are important to me, and stay healthy and

     Really listen to me when I’m stressed or upset.          New Things I Have Learned About Myself
      Show concern. Don’t dismiss me or the feelings
      I’m having
      I’m really sensitive and get hurt easily by what
      people say and do Don’t mistreat me
     The bad things from my past make things hard for
      me today. Be understanding and help me to
      remember it’s in the past and “today’s a new day”
     I do not like to be alone. That’s when things get
      harder for me. It’s easier to have others around
     Trust is hard for me, but I work at it. Don’t do
      things that will damage trust we have with each
      other
     I HAVE TO have people around me who I can talk
      to. It’s what gets me past the hard times. Work to
      understand me and be supportive
     I have had a lot of painful losses in my life; that’s
      the hardest thing for me to deal with
     If people point out the good things that I have
      now, it helps me to feel better and to smile
      When you talk with me, keep things brief or in
      “short thoughts”. At times it’s hard to focus
     Managing money and budgeting is a stressor for
      Mike. Help him with that so that he will be more
      successful when he moves to his own place.

What Other People Need to Know              Do I have medical conditions or mental health issues that other people

     When I’m anxious, I have to talk it out. It’s when      New Things I Have Learned About Myself

      When Mike’s really stressed, he’ll talk a lot and
      won’t be very focused in his thinking. (That’s how
      you’ll know he’s stressed)
     It works well to be reflective in your listening;
      gently bring Mike back to thinking about the good
      things he has in his life now
     Sometimes I don’t think that I have chronic
      schizophrenia. When things get hard, remind me
      that I have a disease, and that’s probably a big
      part of the hard time I’m having
     Talking about not having drugs and alcohol in my
      life makes it easier for me. I want to about it
      ONLY with people who don’t use drugs and alcohol
      in their life
     Keeping the talk about not using drugs and alcohol
      in the forefront is important. BUT Mike will not go
      to support groups about this because he believes
      that the people in the group are still using
     Medicine does help me with my disease. Right now
      I take Resperidal in the morning and night. It
      works best for me to take only ONE medicine at
      one time, or else I feel sick

     Usually, taking my medication is not a problem.
      When I don’t want to take it, I want you to
      “confront” me directly by saying “Michael,
      remember your disease. You need to take your
      medicine.” That usually works

     If I continue to refuse, DO NOT force me to take
      them. Try again later. I’ll take them.
     If I start to have a crisis and need to be in a
      different place for a while, I want to go to respite
      and not to the hospital
     NO restraints or electro shock, ever!

     If I have a crisis or really am not doing well
      overall, I want my stepfather to be notified…Joe
      Stepdad at (111)555-4321
     Mike has hepatitis C and needs help to remember
      to monitor this. Help Mike schedule his doctor
      appointments
  
