Dota 2 : A nerf or a buff?
All Dota players who stuck to the game with complete loyalty, and never shifted to cheap
rip offs of the game like Heroes of Newearth or League of Legends are up for the most
scrumptious treat ever. I think that the name, Dota 2 is being perceived wrongly by
gamers around the world. The game was not meant as a sequel, but as an advanced
better looking version of the same game. Gamers which were expecting a sequel have
been storming forums everywhere, ranting about the game, acting as if they have been
ripped off their money, even though its not even released yet.
There have been many changes in the game play. Apart from the fact, that Dota doesn’t
mean “Defense of the Ancients” anymore. The layout of the map hasn’t been touched,
but the graphics have been changed entirely. The map looks way neater. Hero names
and skills remain the same, but again the animations have been made better a 100
times. Hero models have also been changed. Though some heroes look really cool,
most of them look like they have been shipped right out of the cartoon series, Ben 10.
The heroes look very cartoon-ish. Sven is no more buffed up like Arnold
Schwarzenegger or even as scary as his last name. Apart from remodeling of graphics,
a lot many new features have also been added. In-game voice chat (no more speaking
on Ventrillotm), in-built hotkey selection (no more using Warkeystm) and then there is
my favourite change in the game, AI refilling of leaver spots. Ask any gamer playing on
Garena, the worst that can happen after waiting for 15 minutes for players to fill up, is a
noob player leaving the game after being the first blood. In Dota 2 there will be an option
of reconnection of PPed players or filling up of slots with AI’s. As the game is now going
be run on a Steam engine, matchmaking system has also been introduced. Coaching of
new players is also an interesting feature. Leavers are to be banned after a certain limit,
and tutorials are available in the game (Finally!). I remember a friend of mine wanted to
learn the game and asked me to teach him, trust me it is really confusing where to start
from. He would ask me how I learned the game, and i’d say its complicated!
Dota 2 has been up in controversies ever since Valve’s first announcement about its
The fights are about the ownership of Dota or DotA, the “who copied from
who” fights between HoN, LoL and Dota(or DotA .. argh) and alot more. I’ll like to clear
as much air as possible.
Guinsoo was the creator of Dota, he made the game as a custom map in Warcraft, using
the world editor , taking and modifying it away from what Eul had made (Eul was the
creator of AoS aka Aeon of Strife, Starcraft custom which dota took birth from). Guinsoo
and Penndragon(creator of the site, dota-allstars.com) went off and developed LoL by
working for Riot games. Guinsoo before leaving made Icefrog the developer of DotA.
Icefrog went off to Valve to work on Dota 2 around 2009. HoN came in 2010, and was
rip-off from DotA. It is a paid game, which is incidentally free since the announcement of
release of Dota 2.
The problem now is that, Guinsoo along with Riot games have tried
to copyright the name “Defense of the Ancients”, while Valve tried to copyright the name
Dota(and not DotA!) .
Even though Guinsoo left DotA development to Icefrog and went
on to create LoL, he now wants to share some limelight along with Icefrog after the
release of Dota 2. What i see is a story very similar to the development issues faced by
Facebook. The problem is very similar. Multiple developers having worked on the same
product and then gone in different directions to different companies, in circumstances
where none have a formal agreement on the intellectual property.
We may soon see a
movie on the lines of “The social network”.
All in all, whatever legal battes or “ganks” Guinsoo, Icefrog and Eul fall in into, the winner
is sure going to be us. Even though i see one more faction that gamers will be divided
into, except for the already factions of LoL, HoN and DotA. The faction would be, DotA
v/s Dota 2 . Get ready for never ending youtube rants, forum wars and fanboy rages.
Pick your sides! For me, its Dota 2 GG!
