							ISLAM
TID BITS
 One of the fastest growing religions
  in the world.
 Followers are known as Muslims.
 Strong in the middle east.
 Over 1200 mosques in US
 Right at 2 billion Muslims in the the
world. Over 3 million in US
HISTORY
 Revolves around Muhammad (founder)
 Became frustrated with Polytheism
 Was interested in monotheism (one god)
 He began having visions and were later
recorded in what we now know as the
    Quran (Koran).
 His wife encouraged his visions and she
    was his first convert.
HISTORY
 These visions mark the start of
    Muhammad's call from Allah.
 Received these visions the next 22 years,
until his death in 632 A.D.
 The revelations or visions were not from
    himself but from God.
 They began to be recited in the worship.
HISTORY
 Mecca was Muhammad's hometown, but at first
they didn’t buy into this belief.
 So they (him and his followers) fled to another
    place known as Medina.
 This Hijira (means flight) marks the turning point
in Islam and they mark this date, July 16, 622 as
    their beginning.
 Later Muhammad and his followers took over
Mecca and made it Islam the main religion.
Different Divisions
 A power struggle after Muhammad's death
    produced sects.
 Sunnis- the main division
 The Shia
 The Sufis
 What do we hear about most today?
 Through this though Islam became
    stronger.
TEACHINGS OF ISLAM
 Comprised of Faith and Duty
 Quran
 Word of God in Islam
 Mohammed’s teachings and other sayings
 Only Muhammad's sayings are really important.
        Far above any others?
FIVE ARTICLES OF FAITH
 Main doctrines of Islam
 God- Allah- one true God. He is all knowing and
all powerful but he is not a personal God.
 Angels- Angels are imperative in their beliefs.
 Scripture- Not just Quran but Torah, Psalms of
        David, Gospel of Jesus.
 Prophets- Six greatest- Adam, Noah, Abraham,
        Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad.
 Last days- Follow Allah- paradise, if not hell.
FIVE PILLARS OF FAITH
 Every Muslim must observe:
 Creed- “There is no God but Allah, and
Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah”.
One must state this loudly to be a
      Muslim.
 Prayer- Pray often (5 times a day)

 Almsgiving- Required to give one fourth
of their income to the destitute.
FIVE ARTICLES OF FAITH
  Fasting- (Ramadan) Faithful Muslims
fast from sun up to sun down each day
during the holy month. No food or drink
may be consumed during the daylight
   hours.
 Pilgrimage- Must make a trip to Mecca.
An essential part of their salvation.
JESUS IS A “PART”
 They believe in Jesus, but:
  Not crucified

  Not son of God

 Not as great as Muhammad
SIN AND SALVATION
 Man can do wrong. However,
  salvation is based on the
  previous pillars and articles and
  seeking Allah.
 Sin is lack of obedience to
  Allah.
HEAVEN AND HELL
 One's eternal destination depends on balance
of good to bad deeds in life. On the Last Day,
resurrected humans (meaing not in heaven in
hell at death) and jinn will be judged by Allah
according to their deeds. They are either
granted admission to Paradise, where they will
enjoy spiritual and physical pleasures forever, or
condemned to Hell to suffer spiritual and
    physical torment for eternity.
HEAVEN AND HELL
 The day of judgment is described as
passing over Hell on a narrow bridge
in order to enter Paradise. Those
who fall, weighted by their bad
deeds, will remain in Hell forever.
HEAVEN AND HELL
 The Quran specifies two
  exceptions to this general rule:
 Warriors who die fighting in the
  cause of God are ushered
  immediately to God's presence
  (2:159 and 3:169); and:
HEAVEN AND HELL
 "Enemies of Islam" are sentenced
  immediately to Hell upon death.

ISLAM REJECT:
 The Trinity
 Deity of Christ
 Christ’s death and resurrection.
 Grace alone by faith in Christ one is saved.
 Bible as only authoritative book.
