            Chapter 2-It Takes a Thief

Kane: Well, that moss guy was strange. He-wait! What do you
have right there? That’s an honorary membership to the Thieves’
Guild! Where did you get that?

Mycele: Some bandits attacked me, and I got the card from them
when I beat them.

Kane: I think you should immediately go back to the place you got
that card.

(Meanwhile… at the mysterious room… the bandits are talking to
a fox with a ponytail wearing a cape and several belts, and possibly
5 o’ clock shadow, obviously the one depicted on the Thieves’
Guild wall.)

Griffin: You what?!?

Bandits: Well…um…Mr. Griffin w-we sorta gave him a
membership card.

Griffin: Argh! Griffy! Griff T.! Get over here!
(A female fox and a toad with a headband and ponytail, both
wearing cloaks, show up.)

Griff T.: Yes?

Griffin: Both a’ you get Grifty and find the person who has this
card! I need to have… a chat with him.

Griffy: Of course!

(They speed off. Back at the fortress front…)

Kane: Wait! Before you go… I think we should see Don Pianta.
We don’t want him to fall to the Mario Mafia like the Robbos. If
both join, the whole town will be under Mario’s control.

Mycele: Okay! But how do we see him?

Kane: Don’t spread this around, but you have to buy a dried
shroom, then a dizzy dial. When the owner asks you your favorite
color, you say yellow.

(They travel over to the middle part, and when they get to the
entrance to the west side, a squishing sound is heard.)
Zess T.: Hey! Stop right there. You squished my contact lens! I
expect you to buy a replacement, and you won’t be entering the
west side until you do!

(They obey, and retrieve the lens.)

Zess T.: That’s better, stompy. Now, since you were kind enough
to buy the contact I’ll-

Mycele: But you made me-

Zess T.: SHH! AS I WAS SAYING! I’ll cook something for you
anytime you want. BUT! You have to get the ingredients.

Mycele: Okayyy….

(They continue. They go to Westside Goods, do as Kane said, and
make it to Don Pianta’s “office.”)

Don Pianta: SO! What business couldja possibly have wit’ da
Don?

Vinnie: I think he-

Don Pianta: QUIET! I asked da question!
Mycele: We want to warn you not to ally yourselves with the
Mario Mafia. They-

Don Pianta: HEY! Nobody warns da Don. And dey already offered
us a membership. It seemed very convincin’! He offered us 1/3 of
da profit he’s makin’!

Mycele: WHAT!?! That’s the same deal he offered to the Robbos.
He can’t honestly expect to pay you that price, he’d only have 1/3
of the money himse-

Don Pianta: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!?!?!??!?!?!? HE said
he would take care of da Robbos, not join up wit em! AUGH! I
will neva accept that offa!

Mycele: Okay, now we head to the Thieves’ Guild.

Grifty: Unless the Thieves’ Guild heads to you first!

(A battle sequence starts in Don Pianta’s room. Mycele and the
partner, but I’ll use Kane, vs. Grifty, with 15 HP, 3 attack, and 0
defense, Griffy, with 10 HP, 2 Attack, and 1 defense, and Griff T.,
with 12 HP, 2 Attack, and 1 defense. Griffy can heal, Griff T. can
charge up for an unblockable super attack, and Grifty can call
everybody together to do a 6 power hit every 3 turns. Eventually
they should fall, if Mycele has leveled up properly.)

Grifty: *huff huff* Nice… now I see why you got that honorary
membership. But, nevertheless, I have a job to do. *throws a
smoke bomb*
Mycele: Ahh! That’s not fair.

Griff T.: We’re thieves buddy, get used to it.

(They awake at the Thieves’ Guild room.)

Griffin: Ah! You’re awake! I am the humble leader of the Thieves’
Guild! I heard reports that you are very strong. Defeating the
bandits alone was enough to grant you membership, but then you
defeat my three top soldiers. Very nice. I wish to test you with the
Thieves’ trial. If you pass, I will vow not to join the Mario Mafia.
Even though the deal is enticing. They promised me 1/3 of the
profits!

Mycele: *sigh* I suppose I’ll do it.

Griffin: Good. Grifty will accompany you.

Grifty: *sigh* Fine…

(Grifty joined your party! Grifty’s abilities: A Primer. Grifty can
use his Flying Squirrel technique with his cloak to carry him and
Mycele over air currents. He can also use this in battle to attack
distant enemies. He also can use his smoke bomb technique to
distract enemies to distract enemies for a certain amount of turns,
depending on how you time it.)
(Kane goes into Mycele’s….pocket and Grifty replaces him.)

Griffin: HEY! Wait a minute! Don’t rush to your doom. Don’t you
know you can have two partners out at once? You can use the
control pad to align them the way you want. You can even hold
down X to use their abilities in order! You can choose your
“prime” partner to be the one that goes into battle with you. Also,
if your partner happens to get the first strike, that will be the one
that goes into battle, regardless if it is prime or not.

Mycele: Wow, that’s useful. Umm, Griffin, I recently met a guy
named Might Moss, and he supposedly taught me how to use
a…erm…MIGHT move called Mushroom Cloud. But I haven’t
been able to do it…

Griffin: Oh! A MIGHT move? These are secret moves upheld by
the MIGHT TOAD alliance. They are by toads, for toads! But you
need 2 MIGHT gauges to use Mushroom Cloud, and MIGHT
Moss only gave you one! I’ll power up your gauge so you can use
it. *powers up gauge*

(Your gauge increased to 2!)

Griffin: Okay, now get in there! I have a life too, you know…

Griff T. (to himself): Since when?

(They run into the pipe.)
Bandits: So, uhhh….if you thought he deserved a membership
after all, then why did you punish us?

Griffin: Because… I don’t like you.

Bandits:…

(At the Thieves Trial…)

Grifty: Okay, here we are. This temple requires you to use all of
your skills, and possibly ones you didn’t think you had. It is a
merciless trial…

Mycele: Great. (The bandits attacked ME, so why do I have to do
this? This is going to be a pain… I’m gonna try to run away.)

(He turns around, and the pipe explodes before his eyes.)

Mycele:…

(Mycele and Grifty (plus whatever other partner you have at the
moment) make progress in the temple. They use the joint partner
move, which includes things like Grifty riding air currents while
Kane drops bombs on the ground without falling, which is required
for some puzzles. Mycele uses his jumping smash to jump off a
ledge and smash through a block that is blocking a lower
passageway that is not touching the floor. Like this:

*=Path of Mycele

^=wall

#=block

_=ground ___________****               ^
                                  *    ^
                                    * ^_____
                                     * ##
                                       ##***
                                       ##_____

Or something like that. I’m sure you get the point, but I’m not an
expert. I just thought that if I couldn’t explain it, I’d do my best to
show it. But it really is my first time doing something like that. I
couldn’t use arrows, by the way, because my formatting went all
crazy. Anyway, back to the story. The enemies range from Thief
Grunts, which are foxes that throw 4 rapid-fire knives, each doing
1 damage, more bandits, Guild Bandits, which are like bandits,
except they are purple, have 7 HP, do 3 damage, and steal your
smash, spore, item, or MIGHT commands, if you don’t guard, and
sometimes Thief Mages, which cast 4 damage from a distance, and
can sometimes make you or your partner dizzy. None have any
defense. After navigating through the puzzles, you make it to a
door, where Thief Guards are waiting, and attack you. They each
have 10 HP, 5 attack, and 1 defense. Their attack is a hassle, but
they are not too hard. Once you defeat him they step aside.)
Guard: Go ahead, there’s a bigger surprise waiting for you in there.
*snickers*

Guard: ! We’re not allowed to tell him that!

Guard:…whoops. Well, anyway, since I told you, you might as
well use that save block before you go in there.

(After saving, and possibly healing, you enter the doorway. There
is a big chest in the center. You open it. Eves come out of the
darkness of the chest and stare at you, while arms come out and
flail around. A battle sequence starts… In this battle, the “Chest
Trial” monster has 20 HP, 6 attack, and 2 defense. This battle is
tough because of the defense and attack, but after the chest does
the chest smash attack, it is held up by its arms and can be easily
knocked over with a slam attack. It stays on its back for two turns
and has 0 defense and cannot attack. It can also use an arm flail
attack, where it flails its arms wildly, and does 2 damage three
times. It should fall after a while.)

Chest Trial: YOU HAVE DEFEATED ME FAIR AND SQUARE,
SO I SHOULD GIVE YOU THE TREASURE!!! BUT!!! YOU
HAVE TO ENDURE THE CHEST TRIAL FIRST!!! I WILL
PICK 4 CHESTS AND NUMBER THEM 1, 2, 3, 4. I WILL
THEN SHUFFLE THEM AND YOU WILL HAVE TO PICK
THE CHESTS IN ORDER!!! IF YOU FAIL MORE THAN 3
TIMES, YOU WILL HAVE TO BATTLE MINI-CHESTS, SO I
SUGGEST YOU GET IT RIGHT!!! START NOW!!!

(It picks up the chests and numbers them. When he starts shuffling,
the numbers disappear. Then he throws the chests to the four
corners of the room. If you happen to get it wrong three times, you
have to face Mini-Chests, but they are not too hard with 5 HP, 2
attack, and 1 defense. It shouldn’t take that long to finish the chest
trial.)

Chest Trial: YOU ARE THE FIRST ONE TO ACTUALLY BEAT
MY TRIAL! YOU MORE THAN DESERVE THE TREASURE
CONTAINED IN THIS CHEST!!!

(A fan like thing floats out of the chest, and Mycele grabs it.)

You got the Spore Floater!

(Suddenly, the screen turns plaid, and a toad with pigtails walks up
to Mycele.)

Toadette: Sorry! I was on vacation during the first power-up, but
I’m here now! Heyyyyy…. You’re kinda cute… *giggle* OH!
Anyway… to use the Spore Floater, hold down A, rotate until you
can see your fan spinning, then release and tilt in the direction you
want to go. You can use this to cross short gaps, while also
spreading spores around. *giggle* Well, I’ll seeya next time...
*giggle*

Mycele: OK…wow.

Grifty: Looks like you’ve got a girlfriend… *smirk* You’ll
definitely want to get as many power-ups as possible…HA HA HA
HA HA!!!
Mycele: Let’s keep moving.

(There is a Power Rush P badge in this room past the big treasure
chest, and a key to unlock a new door. This unlocks a new door,
which gives you a Grey Key, which lets you unlock a door that’s
across a gap you have to cross with your Spore Floater. After
crossing a few gaps, crossing air currents, and hitting mid-air
switches, you eventually get to a big door labeled FINAL
CHALLENGE.)

Grifty: Okay, this is definitely the last thing you have to do. Make
sure you’re prepared for this. There’s a save block over there, and
a heart block, as I’m sure you’ve noticed.

(They enter the doorway, and use Grifty’s ability to fly up a
current coming out of a grate, and he floats up to a platform.
Griffin is waiting for him, along with Griff T. and Griffy.)

Griffin: I knew you’d make it through the trial! Well, the final test
is defeating me! It wasn’t that hard to figure out though… Ah
well… let’s get on with it!

(The battle sequence starts. Griff T. and Griffy are exactly the
same, and Griffin has 25 HP, 4 attack, and 0 defense. When he
pulls his cloak over him, he’s invincible, so be wary. Attack his
cronies, or heal yourself, while he’s doing this. Of course, Griffy
won’t hesitate to heal his HP, and Griff T. can give him a defense
boost by 2 for two turns. After you defeat them, he reveals some
important info.)
Griffin: *claps* Very good! You are a full-fledged member of the
Thieves’ Guild now! Feel free to go to our underground café, Herb
T.’s, or try the Pit of 100 Trials! Also, the Mario Mafia is
supposedly heading to Glitzville, the floating coliseum, to gain the
respect of many fans. He’s the current champion, with Prince
Mush behind, then the Great Gonzales Junior Gang, then Rawk
Hawk, and a bunch of other people. I only watch the top matches.
Anyways, I happen to have a Blimp Ticket if you wanna go there.

You received the Blimp Ticket!

Griffin: Just give it to the Cheep Cheep who runs the blimp in the
Rogueport Station. Oh, and go through the doorway behind me.
There’s a surprise waiting for you.

(Mycele runs through the doorway.)

???: HELLO! I AM THE SECOND BROTHER OF THE MIGHT
TOAD ALLIANCE! I’M GLAD YOU CAME!!! NOW YOU
WILL LEARN A VERY USEFUL MOVE FROM THE
EXTRAORDINARY…. MIGHT MOLD!!!

Mycele: Umm…

MIGHT Mold: This technique will be very useful!! Your MIGHT
gauge increases for one more bar, just enough to use this
technique!! It is Healing Spore!! When you activate it, simply
move around and hit the blocks to build up your power!! You don’t
know what’s on the blocks, but they differ a little!! The best way to
master these techniques is to experience them in battle!! Bye!!

(The floor opens up and they appear in the giant room.)

Griffin: Nice job down there! But if you want to stop Mario, you
should leave immediately!

Grifty: Griffin… helping Mycele has made me realize that there is
a lot out there in life, and I want to experience it all! I want to
follow him on his quest.

Griffin: Well… sure! I was expecting it anyways…

Grifty: Okay! Mycele, you better provide me with a lot of
experiences! I might run back if you don’t.

Mycele: That’s pretty much a given…

So Mycele found a new ally, a new ability, another new ability,
and got a fancy fan… and possibly a new girlfriend. But is he
ready for the challenges that await him in the Glitz Pit?
