Kid Smart October 2011 Issue Special points of interest: President’s Address Brooke G. General Meeting Details Dear Members, Public School Forum Welcome to October in Dallas! This is probably one of the best times to live here. The crisp mornings will hopefully be upon us soon. This is definitely the time to grab a pumpkin Halloween Party spice latte while you’re out running errands. I’ve listed a few great events that make this time of year so special in Dallas. I hope to see you at one of these events or one of the many PTA events soon! Autumn at the Arboretum: September 17 – November 23 Inside this issue: See the only pumpkin village in the world at this year’s fall festival featuring over 150,000 fall blooming flowers and 50,000 pumpkins. Cinderella’s Pumpkin Village and Carriage are sure to be great photo opportunities. Enjoy Mommy& Me Mondays and Tiny Tot Tuesdays, September 19 th through November 22nd, including a General Meeting/ 2 petting zoo, face painting, and Kindermusic. If all that doesn’t convince you to go, check out the Oktoberfest Lunch Bunch Garten with a variety of beverages to enjoy! See www.dallasarboretum.org for more information. Nursery Programs 3 Preston Royal Fall Festival – Friday, October 7th, 6 - 9 p.m. The southwest corner of Preston Royal gets into the spirit of things with pony rides, a bounce house, face painting and a petting zoo. Community 4 Spring Creek Farm – Big Orange Pumpkin Farm – September 24 - October 31 Just up Central Expressway in Richardson and back in time, children will delight in the opportunity to search for Public School Forum 5 their very own pumpkin, romp on bales of hay and see a variety of animals. Our playgroup has enjoyed taking a picnic lunch and going on the hayrides together. Go give your family a taste of the country life! www.bobevans.com Birthdays/New 6 Members State Fair of Texas – September 30 – October 23 Visiting the Fair should be an annual tradition for every family in Dallas! Get a corny dog, visit the Food & Fiber Member Spotlight 7 Building and marvel at the crafts, and see the shiny new cars. The fair runs from September 30 th through October 23rd. Special Interests/ 8-10 Trinity River Audubon Center Halloween Party It’s finally cooling down enough for a nature hike with the family. Every Saturday there are guided hikes, as well as planned animal encounters with native animals. This is a great place to explore on your own too. Come celebrate the 50th anniversary of Withers with carnival games and family fun. Outings & Events 13 NDECPTA Public School Forum – Thursday, October 27th, 7 – 9 p.m., Cochran Chapel Open to the Public! Come hear from parents and principals about our neighborhood public schools. All the best, October Calendar 17 Brooke Green, President 1 NDECPTA Meeting October 6th Join us Thursday, October 6th for a fun and informative program: “How To Prepare Your Kids For Kindergarten” Maria Smith is a veteran educator, published author and children’s entertainer. She is the creator of Cool School with Ms. Maria, an educational video and music CD series for children. Maria will join us for our monthly NDECPTA General Meeting and share helpful, creative ideas on getting your little ones school-ready. She’ll also help answer that tough question, “Is my child ready to go to Kindergarten?” Where: Meaders Hall at Cochran Chapel United Methodist Church, located at 9027 Midway Road (southwest corner of Midway Road and Northwest Highway). Bring the kids and meet at the Chick Fil A on Inwood at Willow immediately following the October 6th meeting! 2 Children’s Nursery Oct. 6th: Fire Safety Puppet Show with Dallas Firefighters !!! To reserve your spot in the nursery (for ages six months and older) please contact Becky C. If you have already paid for the year, you automatically have a reservation. Kids in Nursery Have Fun !!! While you are at the General Meeting on the first Thursday of every month, your children, ages 2.5 years and older, will have speakers and projects of their own at the PTA Nursery. There is no better deal in North Dallas than $45 for NDECPTA Nursery with its children’s programming. Check out the plan for 2011- 2012: October: The Dallas Firefighters present a Fire Safety Puppet Show. November: Dallas Public Library’s Amy comes to read a book and afterwards the children make their own bookmarks. December: Merry Makers return with the “Jolly Elf Show” for a full hour of enjoyment. January: The dental hygienist from Marsh Lane Dental makes an encore visit following rave reviews last year. The children will get to create a cotton ball mouth. February: Valentine crafts are planned and hopefully the Dallas Public Library’s children’s librarian will return to share more books. March: It’s Lego time with the Museum of Nature and Science. The kids will build simple machines. To post something, simply reply to any previous Daily PTA email and include your message. We do not post things for non-members who are looking for things (i.e. my non-member friend is looking for a nanny, train table, etc.). We do post things for non-members if it is something of interest to our members (i.e. my non-member friend's nanny is looking for additional work). Please note that if your posting for a non-member requires contact informtion, YOUR (not your friend's name) will be used. You will need to forward any responses on to your friend. We do not post items on consecutive days unless they are for a PTA-sponsored event. The email is queued up the night before, so any items received in the inbox after 9:30 p.m. will be posted on the following day. "Sunshine" is a way we help provide meals to members who are having a new baby, having surgery, or a crisis in life.
