Selecting e-Learning System Based Open Source

lms.gifSetelah spinning fun with definitions and terminology of e-Learning, this time we
will discuss the components of e-Learning is mainly related to the development of
Learning Management System (LMS). Often referred to is called with the LMS e-
Learning platform or Learning Content Management System (LCMS). The point LMS is
an application to virtualize and automate the learning process electronically. Choosing
LMS honest tricky, because many factors must be considered. Yuk we discuss how to
choose the LMS technique is good, of course, is based on open source :)

LMS in general has the standard features of e-learning include:

Completed Features of Teaching and Learning: The category list and Courses, Courses
Syllabus, Course Materials (Based Text or Multimedia), Reference or Reading Material
Discussion and communication features: Forums, or Mailing List, Instant Messenger
for Realtime Communications, information board, Porfil and Contact Instructors, File and
Directory Sharing
Exam and Assignment feature: Online Exam (Exam), Independent Duty (Assignment),
Ratings and Valuation

Ok LHA continued failure by the LMS is from where? Installation is like what? And
whether free or paid?

Patient ;) As other applications, there is a proprietary LMS software and there are open
source. Which include such proprietary below. Although I believe all my friends do not
desire to use :)

  Saba Software (
  Apex Learning (
  Blackboard (
  IntraLearn (
  SAP Enterprise Learning (

While the open source LMS are:

  ATutor (
  Dokeos (
  dotLRN (
  Freestyle Learning (
  Ilias (
  Moodle (
  OpenACS (
  OpenUSS (
  Sakai (
  Spaghetti Learning (

Ok loads its list of LMS applications ;) Must select which one ya? In effect the LMS
selection tailored to the needs and business process that exist in schools and universities
respectively. That its too simple may not fit for schools and universities that want to
implement e-Learning in full. On the other hand the complex LMS and its many not
necessarily correspond to real needs in the field. Some schools and universities and some
have fulfilled only by using a CMS such Wordpress blog ;) Again, do not chase
technology, pursue solutions to solve existing problems.

Interesting to learn the results of research from Sabine Graf and Beate List [Graf, 2005]
which is financed by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the comparative evaluation of
the LMS based on open source. Graph using a single software product evaluation method
called QWS (Qualitative Weight and Sum). QWS calculate the weight (weight) using six
qualitative symbols based on their importance (importance level). Symbols that are sorted
from the most important: E (Essential), * (Extremely Valuable), # (Very Valuable), +
(Valuable), | (marginally Valuable), 0 (Not Valuable). QWS allows us to set a maximum
value itself, so it does not have to "E (Essential) the" most high, it could be "# (Very
Valuable)" for example. Software quality measurement system such as this graph is based
on the "Product" and not "Process". Oh yes, I also never addressed the issue of quality
measurement software in full in the article titled "Software Quality Measurement

Any part that is evaluated by Graf? There are eight categories that were evaluated are:
Communication Tools, Learning Objects, Management of User Data, Usability,
Adaptation, tehnical Aspect, Administration and Management Course. Each category has
subcategories, such as will be seen in the Communication Tools Forum features, Char,
Mail / Message, Announcements, Conferences, Collaboration, and Synchronous /
Asynchronous Tools. Other subcategories can be seen from the figure below.

Ok how did it go? Details in the image below (click to enlarge). In general, Moodle may
be said to dominate the competition, winning, especially in the category Communication
Tools, Learning Objects, Management of User Data, Usability, and Adaptation. Ilias and
Dokeos in second and third, while the fourth is ATutor, LON-CAPA, and Open USS
Spaghettilearning. Sakai and dotLRN there in the last position.

Comparison and Evaluation of LMS Open Source (Source: [Graf, 2005])

It must be recognized that the best Moodle includes a full-featured LMS compared with
other software. Recorded more than thirty thousand educational institutions using Moodle
as their LMS base engine. Including most of the schools and universities in Indonesia
using Moodle. One of the highlights in Moodle is the customization process is relatively
cumbersome, even though we do not understand good programming skills. Templates
and themes that Moodle is also widely available, and supports 40 languages including
Indonesian. Features "Lesson" Moodle is also interesting and not in another LMS.
Features "Lesson" This allows direct students and e-Learning participants are
automatically redirected to another page according to the answers of the questions on a
page. Moodle is one of the constraints are embedded into the full features of Moodle
makes time executionnya so high, alias :) heavy run other small obstacles such as blank
screen error when installing as I write this article.

For the purposes of e-Learning which does not require a high traffic and e-Learning
features of the complex, I recommend the other LMS such as Ilias, Dokeos, or ATutor. I
am using for e-Learning ATutor Braintutor and manage tens of thousands of proven
reliable user with access to a very high level. ATutor is also interesting is applied to e-
Learning companies are more interested in accessing the LMS efficiency, user-friendly
and understanding of materials than the features chat, forums, user tracking, etc.. Jg
ATutor include a pioneer in adopting e-Learning standards. Besides adopting the W3C
WCAG standards, the content packaging also meets the standard IMS / SCORM Content
Packaging Specifications. For information, current Moodle also has adopted the SCORM
standard in enginenya.

However the final choice is upon us, consider the needs and culture of our schools and
universities, before deciding which ones would be used LMS. Tests conducted with
various LMS interesting to see where we think fit. Not all e-Learning that I implemented
for a variety of schools, universities and companies using Moodle engine, but sometimes
also ATutor, Ilias, Dokeos and even dotLRN.

As more and more vendors are developing the LMS and its contents, there is a need to
develop standards that improve interoperability and cooperation among vendors.
ELearning standard making the journey actually started in the era of 1988, and began
terimplementasikan well in the era of 2000 and above. Some of the organizations and
consortia that issued the standard in the world of eLearning are:

  Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) (
Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC) (
IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee (IEEE LTSC) (
  IMS Global Consortium (IMS) (

One widely accepted standard that is issued by the ADL, which is shareable Content
Object Reference Model (SCORM). SCORM specification combines elements of
standard specifications issued by the IEEE, AICC and IMS. SCORM enables content
developers and providers of eLearning is more consistent and easy in implementation due
to the nature of the reusable SCORM. Standard SCORM SCORM evolved from version
1.0, SCORM 1.1, SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004. We have had many Learning
Management System (LMS) that supports SCORM, including the ATutor and Moodle to
the opensource, and intraLearn for commercial products. With SCORM allows us to
import and export content (teaching materials) that you created in an LMS LMS to
another with ease.
