9:00 A.M. Welcoming Remarks – Pat Crocker, President,
                 Childcare Association of Louisiana

9:15 A.M. Keynote Presentation : Maryann “Mar” Harman
The Brain Loves The Song – Not everyone can teach music,
but we all can use music to teach. The brain retains more
information for longer periods of time when learning with music
and movement. This workshop provides the why music is
important, how to integrate it into our daily lives and where to find
the resources to do so. If we give children exposure to music early
in their lives, we give their brain added abilities plus the love for
music which will enhance their lives forever.

accountability. We will discuss creating a culture of change and professional development, and how
to continually motivate our staff to reach for their highest potential.

Session D - Creating Competent and Confident Children: Ready for Kindergarten and Ready for
Life – Presented by Maryann “Mar” Harman (Keynote Speaker)
Too often children enter Kindergarten with a list of things they already think they are not good it.
Teachers are so stressed about cognitive abilities, they neglect to get the TOTAL child ready for
school / life in. Music is the best and easiest way to do that. Through the use of well-thought out music
and movement activities (including child-directed activities, listening games and use of various
languages), children can enter Kindergarten feeling capable, confident and competent.
Mar can be reached at mar@musicwithmar.com

Session E – Cooking up the Childcare Center of the future Presented by Mike Manes
As you and your center move into the future, this program will provide a “recipe” for this adventure.
Ingredients will include change, competition, marketing, process innovation, organizational
architecture, and communications. The good news is that Gumbos provide an opportunity to use
leftovers effectively. Most of us are resistant to change so knowing you can take some “leftovers” that
are important to you and your Childcare Center will make this Gumbo “comfort food” as well as a
nutritious meal of good ideas!

Mike Manes is the owner of Square One Consulting (www.squareoneconsulting.com). He has 38
years work in the insurance industry and is the author of two books – Gumbo Cooking Up the
Organization of the future and Organizational Planning – quick and simple. He was the Instructor of

participants to use what they learned. Food Safety will be an open discussion about food handling in

contamination, and safe food handling.

Session M - Building Bridges: Communication between Little School and Big School Helps
Children and Their Families Make a Successful Transtion & Diverse Delivery
Presented by Lisa Schlakman
What is “School Readiness”? Participants have a moderated dialogue with a panel of kindergarten
teachers to come up with a shared definition of ready children, ready families, and ready schools.
Everything you wanted to know about today’s kindergarten, but where afraid to ask.

Lisa Schlakman is the Program Director for Seamless Transitions, a program in New Orleans that
partners preKs in child care centers with kindergartens in public schools. Teachers work closely over
the year so that students can make a successful transition from “Little School” to “Big School” along
with their families. In addition, the program helps kindergartens become more developmentally
appropriate and welcoming to incoming children from high quality preK settings. Lisa can be reached
