                1
                                           Framework of Indicators

Information-relayer:

A - Stories that communicate knowledge or facts about a current event, situation or incident. They may be pre-
recorded by a reporter or be a short telegram read by the anchor (with or without film footage).

Arena:

B - A platform where politicians may voice any proposals; plans; views of their respective parties/governments
on political issues.
C - A platform where politician(s) or elite member(s) of society (academics, businessmen, professionals within a
certain field, etc) give their opinion on a current event, situation or incident.
D - A discussion or debate between the aforementioned.
E - Members of the general public are called upon to comment on an event, situation or incident. They may be
directly or indirectly involved or affected by the event being reported. Content of the commentary is of no
concern as long as it does not comprise any of the indicators of the culture sustainer category.
F - A discussion or debate between the aforementioned.
G - Exception: individual(s) who act as eyewitnesses to an event and describe observed facts of a current event,
situation or incident. These commentaries will fall under the category of information-relayer.

Culture Sustainer:

H - Images; symbols; scenarios; historical events or rituals commonly associated with and representative of a
particular culture, be it “British”, “Muslim”, “Nordic”, “Racist”, etc.
I - Representations of ethnicity. Ethnicity in this context refers to language, customs and traditions which are
shared by a people. As language is present in most forms of social interaction and communication, here it refers
to accents as well as words which have achieved a socially constructed or discursively created cultural-
associated meaning. In other words, stereotypical usage of the verbal. For example: “G’day mate!” = Australian
J - Stereotypical depictions of a racialized group. That is, simplification, exaggeration, generalization or
reification of cultural attributes associated with a particular community.
K - Stereotypical depictions of a religion/religious group.
L - Any statement which epitomizes or typifies the ‘us’ vs. ‘them’ divide in a negative or derogatory way. In
other words, the culture of the ‘other’ is put in a subordinate position to the culture of the ‘us’ where differences
are underscored by the speaker. Correspondingly, the reverse utilization of this theme will also qualify. That is,
statements that coalesce the differences of cultures in a positive, optimistic and unifying manner.
