rooms. Contact the hotel to be placed on the waiting list.
The Colony is a non-smoking hotel. People who smoke there will be assessed a fee.
Each additional person above 2 guests in a room will increase the room rate by $30.00 per day.
The price of one night's stay will be charged to your card as a deposit when you make the reservation.
You may cancel up to 7 days in advance of arrival for a refund less a $25.00 processing fee. If you must
cancel within 7 days of arrival, it is a loss of the one night's deposit.

        Meals at The Colony Hotel
The Wednesday (Auction) and Friday night (Awards Banquet) dinners will be served at The Colony.
On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, you're welcome to explore the area's many dining options, or

ahead of time if you'd like to have dinner on a non-banquet evening.

       Pet Policies
The Colony Hotel will allow up to 4 dogs in a room, based on the size of the room.
The hotel is pet-friendly; your dogs are welcome everywhere except the dining room. You are expected
to clean up after your dogs. The grounds crew will enforce this.
There will be a pet deposit of $60.00 for the week.
Please bring an old sheet or bedspread to cover your bed(s). We will have some available for purchase
at the show.

RV Parking at the Host Hotel

guests who are not staying at the hotel. See the RV Parking page at BCCA2011.com for information
on nearby campgrounds.
If you have a motor home and are staying at the hotel, you must pre-register with the hotel's sales
department before you arrive. Please email the hotel's Reservations Manager with the length of
your RV. Guests are not allowed to sleep in motor homes at the hotel; this is a town ordinance.

    Overflow Hotels
Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport is lined with scenic hotels, resort hotels, and bed-and-breakfast inns.
The following hotels are located near the Host Hotel.
The Drake's Island Resort (2073 Post Road, Wells Beach; 207-646-4301) is located 10 minutes from
the Colony. They are super dog friendly and happy to have us! They have cottages, motel units, and
even a couple of campers to rent. Mention the BCCA to get a discount (and the prices are not bad to
begin with). The resport is right near 3 dog-friendly beaches. Shelli, the owner, is super excited and
can't wait for us to visit. You can contact her by email at contact@drakesislandresort.com.
The Fontenay Terrace Hotel (128 Ocean Avenue, Kennebunkport; 207-967-3556) is located next
door to the Colony. They do not take pets, but would be a convenient and reasonably-priced choice for
those travelling without dogs.
The Lodge At Turbat's Creek (7 Turbat's Creek Road, Kennebunkport; 1-877-594-5634 or 207-967-
8700) has good prices, 6 pet-friendly rooms, and a 15% discount if you book for 5 or more nights.
We're also working with The Yachtsman Lodge & Marina (which is pet friendly) for overflow rooms.
The Yachtsman is located at 59 Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport, overlooking the Kennebunk River.
Phone: 207-967-2511.
Shorelands Guest Resort on Route 9 in Kennebunkport (1-800-99BEACH or 207-985-4460) is 2
miles from downtown Kennebunkport. It is a pet-friendly family resort that offers grills and lobster
cookers for do-it-yourself gourmets. Some units have fully equipped kitchens, ad all have TVs and air
conditioning (not that you'll need the AC much in October).
The Hound's Tooth Inn (82 Summer Street in Kennebunk, 207-985-0117) is 4 miles from the host
hotel. This 1843 New England farmhouse B&B is just around the corner from the Kennebunk dog park,
and just minutes from the beach and from The Colony.
The Green Heron Inn (126 Ocean Avenue, Kennebunkport, 207-967-3315) is just down the street
from The Colony. It is a lovely B&B with 4 pet-friendly rooms. 3 of those rooms can be booked from
the 3rd- 7th. The last one is available only on the 6th & 7th.
The Captain Jefferds Inn, 5 Pearl Street in Kennebunkport, is a classic New England bed & breakfast
offering everything from a private exercise yard and in-house dog-sitting (for an hourly fee) to a
personalized dog biscuit. The Inn is not part of the Specialty's negotiated hotel rates; room prices
range between $179-$369 per night in the prime season.

    RV Camping
The Red Apple Campground, located about 10 minutes' drive from The Colony at 111 Sinnott Road,
Kennebunkport, ME (207-967-4927), offers pet-friendly RV camping with a new exercise area. The
campground also features two pet-friendly cabins for rent. All 140 sites have water and electricity, and
some offer cable and sewer hookups as well. Other amenities include free showers, a laundry facility, a
store, and a recreation center.
Camping at the Agility Trial Site
The agility trial will be held at Wassamki Springs Campground in Scarborough, ME. Visit the
Wassamki website at http://www.wassamkisprings.com to make camping arrangements.
Wassamki Springs is located 28 miles from the host hotel.

    Hotels Near the Herding Events
The herding events will be held at Two Shadows Farm in New Braintree, MA. The farm is located 136
miles from the host hotel (a little less than 3 hours' drive).
 Copper Lantern Motor Lodge, 184 W Main St, West Brookfield, MA: 508-867-6441.
 Motel 6 Sturbridge, 408 Main St, Sturbridge, MA: 508-347-7327.
 Econo Lodge Sturbridge, 682 Main St, Sturbridge, MA: 508-347-2324.
 Sturbridge Host Hotel and Conference Center, 366 Main Street, Sturbridge, MA: 508-347-
7393. Pet-friendly hotel 18 miles from the herding site. Pet fee is $25 per pet, per night. Rooms
range from $127 to $147 per night, though they sometimes offer vacation getaway packages in
        October for the foliage season.

    Airports and Shuttles
Kennebunkport is served by three airports:
 Portland International Jetport, Portland, ME (PWM): 29 miles
 Logan International Airport, Boston, MA (BOS): 84 miles
 Manchester Airport, Manchester, NH (MHT): 76 miles
If you are flying in from a long distance or from another country, your best chance of getting non-stop
flights and bargain fares is by flying into Boston, but we locals generally find it a huge hassle to get into
and out of that airport. Plan for the traffic jams if you have a flight to catch! Boston does have non-
stop, dog-friendly flights from the West Coast on Alaska Airlines.
There are shuttles, buses, and airport limos serving Kennebunkport from all three airports, plus the
usual complement of car rentals.

       Shuttles
Coastal Cab Company is located right in Kennebunk (right next door to Kennebunkport). The
company is dog-friendly, and transports both pups and passengers to and from Portland
International Jetport, Logan Airport in Boston, and the Colony Hotel. The company also
serves the Amtrak Downeaster stations. They're friendly, reasonably priced, and happy to
help. You can contact them at 207-284-0118 or 207-229-0783. You can also contact Coastal
Cab online.
Mermaid Transportation (1-888-MERMAID or 207-885-5630) is a pet-friendly shuttle service
transporting to and from all three airports. Mermaid vans are also available for sightseeing trips and
other excursions.
Maine Limousine Service (1-800-646-0068 or 207-883-0222) is another pet-friendly shuttle service
featuring a variety of vehicle types. Dogs are allowed to ride either in or out of crates in any vehicle —
including the super stretch limo! Maine Limo also serves all three airports.
Airport Car Express (888-893-8294 or 207-893-8294) serves Portsmouth, NH (PSM), Augusta
(AUG), and Bangor (BGR) airports in addition to the larger ones listed above.
Custom Coach & Limousine (1-800-585-3589) boasts a wide variety of vehicles, from traditional
limousines to vans to buses. This company serves all of the major airports.

        Agility
Monday, October 3
Wassamki Springs Campground

56 Saco Street

Scarborough, ME 04074
http://www.wassamkisprings.com
The agility trials take place at a campground about 28 miles from the host hotel. If you have a camper,
you might prefer to camp at Wassamki Springs the night before the agility trial. Visit the Wassamki
website to make camping arrangements.
The campground will charge a nominal parking fee per car for day (non-camping) traffic. Wassamki is
allowing the BCCA to use the campground for free for the trial, so the parking fee is their only source
of income from non-campers for that day.
Event Chair
Joanne Williamson
Judge
Kathleen Rupprecht (Bio)
Trial Secretary
Noreen Bennett, Paw Print Trials
Entries will open Wednesday, July 13 at 10 AM and close Saturday, August 27 at 6 PM.
The new AKC game, Time2Beat, will be offered in place of FAST as the first class of the day.
The fun agility relay will be held after the AKC events of the day are over. Our judge, Kathleen
Rupprecht, will be designing a fun and fast course suitable for Novice dogs. Anyone who got a chance
to see the video from the runs in Colorado knows just how hilarious and unpredictable this event can
be.
This year Joanne, the trial chair, would like to ask that the teams try to get other non-agility folks to
sponsor them. All the money raised will be donated to the BCCA-Donor Advised-CHF fund to support
health research. You won't be required to have sponsors in order to enter but there will be a special
prize for the team raising the most money.
Download the Agility Relay form here.
Download the Premium List here (Word format) (PDF format).
So, start now...organize those teams, design the shirts, and get ready for a fun event to support an
important cause... canine health research.

    Trophies
Trophy Donation Chair
Cindy Alspaugh, stonebaybeardies@yahoo.com

The BCCA National Specialty counts on its members, exhibitors, and friends to sponsor individual
trophies. If you sponsored a particular trophy or donated to the General Trophy Fund, we thank you
from the bottoms of our tired little hearts for your kind contributions.

       Available Trophies
Have a soft spot in your heart for the puppies? Consider sponsoring a Puppy trophy in the Sweeps or
in regular Classes. How about encouraging a promising Junior Handler? Maybe you'd like to
memorialize a special Beardie or Beardie person. Is herding your thing? You could sponsor a trophy
for the herding events. We have available trophies for agility, obedience, and rally. Too many options?
We will gratefully accept donations to the General Trophy Fund as well.

Most trophies can be had for as little as $20, and there are still some big trophies available! We'll be
updating this list as frequently as possible. If you have any questions about whether a trophy is still
available, contact the Trophy Donation Chair.

What do you get for your donation dollars? If you got your donation to the Trophy Donation Chair by
August 15, you'll get your name, your kennel name (if you have one), and your dedication listed in the
2011 Specialty catalog. You'll also get to make someone's day — or even bring the trophy home
yourself, if you win it. Not only that, but you'll earn the undying thanks of the Specialty Committee.
Every trophy sponsorship provides funds toward putting on a great National Specialty.

       Can't Decide?
So you'd like to sponsor a trophy, but can't decide which one to pick? That's OK — a number of people
have already donated to the General Trophy Fund. Your general trophy donation helps us fund all of
the trophies that don't have individual sponsors. You can still be thanked publicly in the show catalog
if you get your donation in by August 15!

       What's Still Available?
To view the available trophies in a PDF document, look here.

       How To Sponsor a Trophy
It's easy to sponsor a trophy! Before you start, just remember these simple but important AKC rules for
dedicating trophies (Per AKC Show Trial Manual 2-17 & 2-18 and AKC Show Policy Sec. 4-3 IV):

 "In Memory of" — Person or dog must be deceased

 "In Honor of" — Person is living, but no longer an active breeder or exhibitor

 There is no category for living dogs

Now that you've selected the trophy (or better yet, trophies) that you'd like to sponsor, download the
Trophy Donation Form, fill it out, and mail it to the Trophy Donation Chair with your check or
money order in US Funds.

Mail your forms and checks to:

                                          Cindy Alspaugh

                                         5552 Polson Lane

    Annual Membership Meeting
Thursday, October 6

Main Dining Room
Yes, we know it's not the most exciting thing you'll do all week, but the BCCA needs to hear from its
members at the Annual Meeting. The Club cannot conduct any business without a quorum present, so
go! Be seen and heard. If you have suggestions, bring them. If you have concerns, offer them. It won't
take that long, and it's your one opportunity to speak face-to-face with your Board.

    Fundraising and Raffles
Let's face it. It costs a lot to put on a Specialty, and the seed money from the BCCA only goes so far.
Host clubs need to raise thousands of dollars toward creating a great Specialty, and the more they can
raise, the more "perks" a club can afford to offer.

That's where generous friends and Beardie fans like you come in. There are many ways you can help us
raise the funds we need to put on a good show for you and to reimburse BCCA for their stake in our
success. You can help us in the following ways:

 Buy our stuff! (Logowear is coming soon.) Remember, every purchase automatically enters
        you into the Buyers' Raffle.
 Become a sponsor for the show. You, your business, or your regional club could be a
much-appreciated sponsor by donating money or goods.

 Sponsor a trophy. We give out an amazing number or trophies at the show, and most can be
had for very small sums of money.

 Buy raffle tickets. We currently have two raffles going on: one for very limited-edition
Beardie collectible, and the "big raffle" to win cash or amazing handcrafted Beardie items.

    Beardie Stuff Galore

The BCCA National Specialty wouldn't exist if not for the generosity of its donors. Your donations help
us cover the costs of everything associated with putting on a production of this size, from ribbons and
rosettes to gifts for our judges to printing and postage costs.

As an individual donor, you'll not only receive heartfelt thanks from the Show Commitee, but also
some small tokens of our appreciation for your generosity. Note that the deadline is August 15, 2011
for inclusion in the show catalog (of course we'd stll happily accept contributions after that date —
we just want you to get the credit you deserve!).

Join the august company of generous sponsors and donors — and heartfelt thanks to those who
have already donated funds and goods.

    Raffles
We know you've been waiting for this... the biggest fundraising raffle of the whole Specialty! Here are
the fabulous prizes you could win:

 First Prize — $500.00 CASH — which could sweeten your Maine stay just that much more!

 Second Prize — A beautiful handmade Beardie quilt by Ann Rambaud!

 Third Prize — Custom portrait from a photo of your dog by Maine artist Jeanne McNally!

Tickets are $5.00 each, or 5 for $20.00. Winners will be drawn at the Awards Banquet.

       Handmade Beardie Quilt
Long-time BCCA member Ann Rambaud's quilts have fetched terrific amounts of money for worthy
groups such as New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue, and the lucky recipients of Ann's work
have treasured her quilts for the heirlooms they are. Check out the front and back of the beautiful
Beardie quilt Ann has donated to this year's Specialty!
      Custom Portrait
Maine artist Jeanne McNally designed the artwork for our "Ewe Had Me" mugs and notecards. She
has the ability to capture a dog's soul and personality in her paintings, and she offers a number of
doggie items for sale at her Shamrock Artworks website. See the BCCA2011.com Raffles page for
some examples of Beardies Jeanne has captured in the past. You could win a chance to have Jeannie
capture your Beardie in a piece of original art!

      Beardie Magic Chess Set
Only three of these very special Beardie chess sets were ever produced — talk about a limited edition!
Charles Namey and Janet Atkins hand-sculpted and painted these clay pieces for the 1996 BCCA
National Specialty in Orlando. They come with a 19" square vinyl board.

Honestly, this little photo just doesn't do justice to the set. Click on the photo to see a bigger version,
and check out the details! There are little Beardies peeking out of the rooks (castle towers). The
bishops are wizards, and the knights in the brown set have helmets. How cute is all that?!

Tickets are $5 apiece or 5 for $20. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Mary
Watson.

      Be a Star!
Be a "Star" forever by having your kennel name or personal name embroidered in one of the many
stars that will be placed on this specially designed banner. The double-sided fabric banner has been
custom made with the BCCA logo beautifully embroidered in the center of each side. The banner will
be proudly displayed each year with all of the regional club banners at each National Specialty. Names
will be placed on the banner in the order in which they are received.

All orders must be received no later than September 1, 2011 for inclusion on this year's banner. Cost
per "star" is $125.00 $95.00, for a limited time!
To Be a Star, mark your order on the Be a Star Form.

    Help Wanted
All Specialties depend on volunteers to keep things running smoothly, and this one is no different.
We're all volunteers, from the Show Chair to the kindly people setting the agility jumps and
straightening the tunnels. If you have some time to spare and can help out, you'll earn the undying
thanks of the chair and the committee. The exhibitors might not know it, but they'll appreciate your
being there, too!

Don't have experience? Don't worry! Most volunteer jobs require no prior training, and there will be
experienced folks there to show you what to do.

Are you entered in an event? Mention the class you're entered in to the chair. We'll make sure that you
have plenty of time to get ready for your own run.

       Ongoing (All Week Long)
 Help manning the logowear table — contact Casey

 Help selling raffle tickets — contact Val

 Help manning the General Store table — contact Val or Lesley

 Help with the Hospitality area. This can involve a number of simple jobs, from handing out
maps and flyers to keeping the dog biscuit dish and cookie tray filled. Contact Cindy if you can
        help.

 Stewards and gofers for the conformation, obedience, and rally rings. Some of these positions
do require some experience, but some don't. Contact Pat or Debby for conformation, and
Elizabeth or Trudy for obedience and rally.
 Help with Judges' Hospitality — this could include picking the judges up at the airport,
showing them the local sights, taking them to dinner, and so on. Contact Kathy to help her
        out.

 Trophy gofers — If you can carry trophies from Point A to Point B and set them gently onto a
table, then we need you! All of our events have trophies, and most of the trophies are fragile.
Contact Cindy to join the gofer crew.

       Herding Tests/Trials, Saturday, October 1
The herding events need the following volunteers. You may sign up to help out using the sign-up form
on the premium list, or contact Joanne. Like the agility trial, the herding events will have a Workers'
Raffle — and all you have to do to enter is show up and help out! How great is that?!

Agility Trial and Fun Relay, Monday, October 3
Agility trials always need a small army of volunteers to perform a multitude of tasks: run score sheets,
operate a stopwatch, set jumps, straighten out tunnels, set up, tear down, and so on. Most of these
don't require any advance training. The great thing about working at the agility trial is that they're
having a Workers' Raffle! Just show up at the trial, do your job, and you'll be automatically entered
into the Workers' Raffle!

Any questions? Want to win some stuff? Contact Joanne.
