Purpose and Theme
• Encourage the new converts (3:3-5)
• To give instruction in godly living (4:1-12)
• To give assurance concerning the future of
  believers who die before Christ’s return
  (4:13-18)
• The theme seems to be the subject of
  eschatology (study of bible prophecy and
  last day teachings).
    – Every chapter ends with a reference to the
      second coming

Thanksgiving
• The Grounds for the Thanksgiving
  (1:1–4)
    – He has chosen you (us!!!!) vs. 4

• The Genuineness (1:5–10)
    – By power, Holy Spirit, deep conviction

    Theme: vs.10 “and to wait for his Son from
      heaven, whom he raised from the dead
      —Jesus, who rescues us from the coming
      wrath”.

  3:10)
    – We were torn away from you in person,
      not thought.
    – I wanted to come to you but Satan
      stopped us
    – Paul shows that he could never forget
      them
         • For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown?
         • Indeed, you are our glory and joy.
         Theme: end of vs. 19 “in the presence of our
           Lord Jesus when he comes”
